Float Style Fuel senders

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Fri Feb 17, 2012 8:27 pm

As promised the part number for the Stewart Warner float style fuel level sender is 385C-F (right hand). I use the same one on both sides for simplicity etc and they list at about $43.00 Cdn each. There is also a left hand one, part #385B-F, but it is easier just to use the same one on both sides (use which ever part # they have in stock for you). These are 240 ohm senders and will work with any of the fuel gauges (designed for float senders) that are sold by Aircraft Spruce, Wag Aero, etc, or you could just use the gauges Stewart Warner sells also.

To save you some time figuring out exactly were they go, so you get an even swing on the float arm (that must be cut and bent to suit the application), the 1 3/8" installation hole is drilled 7 1/2" aft of the main spar and 4 5/8" up from the bottom of the root rib. This location gives a comprimise, on the side of showing the actual 1/4 to full tank side. When the floats/gauges reach empty here, you will be running on your 45 minute reserve if running on both tanks (you hope)! I highly suggest a .032 or .040 doubler around the area on the standard rebel and the use of "float" anchor nuts for attachment of the sender. These anchor nuts are sealed by a bulb like stamping and have an o-ring on the mounting face. When installed and coated with Proseal they will provide a sealed reusable mounting nut for the 5 x 1032 screws needed to hold the sender in place. The sender mounting pattern is not concentric, so make sure you have it the right way up when drilling your 5 holes!

Wayne,

Can the Stewart Warner unit be removed and re-installed through the
installation hole? From the photo it appears possible, but it is difficult
to tell. My concern is if it ever needs maintenance of some kind, or
replacement, will I have to open up the tank to get at it?

Thanks for the help.

Yes Roger, they can! This is why they should be installed with sealed anchor
nuts, for ease of maintenance and a good seal. The sender can be removed
without wing removal by using an offset screwdriver to get the screws out.
There is just enough distance (between wing and fuselage) to get the sender
body out of the tank and then it will swing down to allow the float arm and
float to be lifted out of the hole. That's the plan anyhow, but Mine have
been functional for 5 years with no "hiccups" so I haven't tried out the
theory! Mine also are the older style and they have metal floats and
rheostats. The senders from SW are now coming with a composite float and
thin film rheostats. They are supposed to last about 20 times longer than
the model I have in mine. The picture I sent you shows the newer style
sender. My experience with float senders, based on my 1958 Cessna 182 is
that it only had one of the senders replaced once (according to the logs)
and that was me in 1992. This is were I got the SW part # number to use for
the Rebel, as Cessna was no longer supplying these senders and you were
required to do a $1000 STC to retrofit. I took the sender from the AME and
told him I would take it home and fixed it first, but then went straight to
an automotive supply house and got the EXACT same one!

Anytime! I have numerous shots of just about anything, if you get stuck
somewhere! On average I take about 100 pictures, through out the process,
when I do a reburbishment on an aircraft and of course lots while building
new. As an example I have 111 digital pictures (and about 48 on film) from
the building of a set of Super Rebel wings alone! It can really help with
the next job, as my memory is getting worse as time goes on! Could be all
this aluminum dust!!!!

Great price Roger! Two for the price of one, provided the shipping isn't as
much as the parts! Make sure when you order the gauges (or if you have
already) that they are the 240 ohm models.

Wayne,

Shipping was $4.46 USD via UPS Ground from CA to OR. I'm still doing
research on a gauge(s).

Thanks again for the info, the photo, and the help. I think this setup will
work well for my needs.
