Do you have access to a lathe? I built a tailwheel from plans by Bob

Hi Keith
I'm still building, but the Elite supplied wheel seems more substantial than
the rebel one I saw a few years ago. Having said that, mine still needed to
be dismantled and greased up fully to get a nice free feel to the mechanism.
Still a while away from being able to taxi and see what it behaves like
though.

The tailwheel debate comes up from time to time, but I don't recall ever
hearing directly about a Rebel groundloop. Henri, if you don't mind
elaborating ...what was it about the Rebel tailwheel that helped lead to a
ground loop?

I have the upgraded Elite tail wheel on my Elite and I like it. Like Ralph
said there is an issue with the mounting on an Elite. Mine is angled what
appears to be backward in my thinking. The only problem I have is if the
wheel is reversed and I need to lock it back in, I don't have enough brake,
but that's a brake issue. It is now a habit for me to just straighten the
wheel to it's normal position after moving the aircraft by hand. I usually
keep it well greased too so it breaks easier. I think it's perfect.

[rebel-builders] Best Tailwheel ?

Post by Kevin & Nancy Mayville » Sun Feb 19, 2012 5:20 pm

I purchased a 6'' Matco pneumatic tail wheel to replace the solid wheel that
came with the kit. I have yet to install it since I think I have to replace
the spring since it has a single mounting hole ( compared to the one I have
with is mounted with two bolts ) and I don't think I can redrill the spring.
I like the looks of the Matco wheel and a friend had a solid Matco on his
T18 which worked fine.I think the pneumatic will help smooth the bumps out
of taxing on the asphalt.

I looked at that seriously but the Matco 8" with the same tire and tube
as the Scott 3200 was cheaper at around US$220, ready made, and works
fine as per my previous post. Matco said some Bearhawks use it and it is
good for 700 lbs tail weight. The large sweepback on the Barrows will
load the tailspring more which might be a concern if using the
fibreglass spring. The Barrows uses ball bearings instead of bronze
bushings to swivel but some friction is needed there anyway and the
Matco lets you adjust it.

I believe a google on Bob Barrows tailwheel or Bearhawk tailwheel will
find the one Drew mentioned.

FWIW, The Bob Barrows design wheel is made commercially by

The price has gone up a bit since I got mine two and half years ago, they're
now $643 complete. I haven't taxied or flown it yet, but the quality is
superb. I have it on a slightly modified Champ tailspring. I'm looking
forward to a Cadillac ride. :-)

G'day from Australia

I would just like to offer these experiences that I had with the standard MAM
tail wheel.

Despite my best efforts at care and maintenance the assembly wore quickly and
eventually broke. The steering arm, where the rudder cables are connected became
disconnected from the main shaft and of course it caused a monumental ground
loop, but thankfully there wasn

Others have pointed out the link. I should add that mine was so cheap
because I was able to find some scrap steel and I'm using one of the
nosewheels off my floats for the rim and tire. The drawings were $25 and
are well worth it just to see how it's made.
