Buiders tip

Post by Tim Hickey » Sun Feb 19, 2012 5:20 pm

And now for something completely different:

A builder's tip:

Today we started drilling the stringers for the wing. We built the stringer
holding jig as per the plans, and are using the wing skin for the template:
Again, per the plans.

We ran into a very small problem. After we drilled the first hole, we moved
down the skin several feet to drill another one so we could get the stringer
lined up with the pre-punched holes. We did two just fine. When we moved
another few feet to drill a third hole, we found that the first two clecos,
which are stuck into the plywood under the flange of the stringer, were
holding the skin out of position.
(two points make a straight line)
Trouble was, the skin was not perfectly aligned with the gap that I left in
the jig.

So what we did is about every three feet we chopped out the plywood 1/2 inch
on each side of a rivet location. Then, when we drilled the stringer, and
inserted a cleco, the cleco was no longer held in a fixed position by the
plywood. That gave us a little wiggle room to position the stringer under
the skin correctly.
