[rebel-builders] Border crossing

Post by Ted Waltman » Sun Feb 19, 2012 5:16 pm

I thought that 1-hr email thing didn't actually get implemented. Or, maybe
it was 24 hrs in advance. I'll have to reread the stuff on AOPA or
somewhere. Also, someone made a comment about Canada requiring 12" #'s to
cross the border--the U.S. only requires 3" #'s for the Canadian border--12"
for coastal or Mexico though.

I know all of this border stuff is a PITA. Why not make car's do the same
thing????? I'm tired of the gov't making me feel like a criminal in my own
country.

I am troubled by the "Electronic iron curtain" that devides the U.S.
and Canada. With the ruling by the Department of Homeland
Security that requires that everyone leaving, or entering the U.S.
by aircraft, be required to E-MAIL them at least one hour in
advance with information about all passengers and crew.
Also very soon they will be flying unmaned radio controled aircraft
to patrol the border, the aircraft will be flowen out of Grand Forks
North Dakota. I think that this is "The Sky is Falling" mentality.
I think that all of the customs between the U.S. and Canada
should be eliminated such as that which has been done in Europe,
then beef up security at the coastal borders, and ports of entry.
I may as well sell my floats because where I fly there is no
E-MAIL access.

I agree. As am American living and working in Canada I am embarrassed when my friends have to go through all this effort to fly to the US and the Canadian CANPASS system is a piece of cake.

I feel the US is heading toward isolationism.

Write your congressman!

Ted:

I read about the one hour rule, as a final rule in the
General Aviation News (GAN) a few weeks back.
also there is a bit about it in the January issue of
EAA sport Aviation page 11.

I agree completely. It should be renamed the department of homeland
paranoia. Sometimes at work I load vessels bound from Goderich Ont. to the
states. The level of security for loading a boat with salt is unbelievable
and totally ineffective. We guard the dockside with fences, cameras and
people yet the water side of the boat is totally open and only a hundred
yards from a public boat launch. I used to always think it would be great
to fly my plane to Oshkosh once I finished it but now I couldn't care less
and have no desire to ever fly in the states.

[rebel-builders] Border crossing

Post by Walter Klatt » Sun Feb 19, 2012 5:16 pm

As I understand it, later in May it will become mandatory to fill out the
online form with your crew and passenger information prior to your flight.
Previously, I just printed the form with the information and gave it to them
after landing. Also had to call them at least one hour in advance to tell
them exactly when I was arriving. Now, if we can do that online, and not
have to call, that would be a major improvement over the current procedure.

All the airports that I know here in Canada have email and internet
available to pilots, so should be no problem going online. If at home, I
would do it before I leave for the airport.

There is good information available on the AOPA and COPA websites to step us
through exactly what we have do to do when crossing the border. When the
time comes, I just go there and get the latest information, and proceed
accordingly. For me, it has never been a big deal.

But I agree, there are more and more regulations to be mindful of these
days, with airspace restrictions including lakes that are shut down to float
planes. However, I don't let that stop me from enjoying the privilege of
flying, and to places that the non-flying public can only imagine.

If we can figure out how to build a plane, and fly it, getting across the
border should be a piece of cake.

Walter

Thanks for the upbeat border note. I especially like your take that if you
can build a plane you can figure out how to cross the border.

I've flown our Cessna 182 back and forth many times. The old system was a
hassle and the new system is probably just a different hassle. There's a lot
of frustration since many of us down here were part of the process trying to
keep these new unnecessary rules from going into effect. Actually, we've
been trying to get them to be more like CANPASS. Haven't given up, but won't
keep me from crossing the border.

See you up on Harrison Lake in the near future.

[rebel-builders] Border crossing

Post by Keith Leitch » Sun Feb 19, 2012 5:16 pm

Well, my dreams of flying into Canada up to Alaska have been blown out of the water. I've been flying for over 20 years and last summer I let my medical lapse and am currently flying under the US Sport Pilot rules. I will NOT be renewing it due to health and personal reasons. Unfortunately I need to have a medical certificate to cross the border. This is a Canadian rule from what I understand. I am finding more and more guys down here with the same problem. I live in Northern MN and it is a short hop to get across the border. I have several friends in Canada and the only way to visit now is with one of those 4-wheeled contraptions.:( I would prefer to fly my floatplane up.
How about you Canadian's petition your gov'ment to allow us Sport Pilot guys to fly across. :)

Keith Pierson
I agree completely. It should be renamed the department of homeland
paranoia. Sometimes at work I load vessels bound from Goderich Ont. to the
states. The level of security for loading a boat with salt is unbelievable
and totally ineffective. We guard the dockside with fences, cameras and
people yet the water side of the boat is totally open and only a hundred
yards from a public boat launch. I used to always think it would be great
to fly my plane to Oshkosh once I finished it but now I couldn't care less
and have no desire to ever fly in the states.
