Grove spring gear / Elite

Post by Ralph Baker » Fri Feb 17, 2012 8:27 pm

Has anyone had any experience fitting Grove spring gear (one piece) to
replace the standard Elite 2 piece gear? This would seem to better
distribute the forces.

Grove spring gear / Elite

Hi Ralph !

Haven't heard of anyone doing this, but it DOES sound like
it might be a good idea. You would have to clamp the gear on with
large U bolts at the fuse sides, leaving the center free (ala Zenair).
I think the flex at the center is what saves the structure...
The Citabria also uses these bolts - and this is a DAILY inspection
item, as they tend to crack about every 100 - 200 hours, or so, in
heavy service (glider towing on rough grass fields - I was maintenance
director of a large gliding club for many years ...).

That reminds me - for those of you using steel leaf springs
on the tail - our Super Cubs would break one or more leaves every
couple of months !! We started buying leaf spring sets in bulk, and
inspecting daily - this helped reduce the damage to the rudders !!

Grove spring gear / Elite

Post by rebelair » Fri Feb 17, 2012 8:27 pm

Hi Ralph

I have not seen this but my buddy & I have discussed the possibility. I
ordered a tailskid from Grove & he was great to deal with. He delivered
exactly what he promised. I just recently fitted it replacing my fiberglas
tailskid. Please post any details which you may have.

Thanks

A G Yeoman

Grove spring gear / Elite

Post by A G Yeoman » Fri Feb 17, 2012 8:27 pm

Hi Ralph,

I did think about the one piece gear for my Rebel, thinking
along the same lines as yourself. It would dissipate the landing loads
before they enter the fuse.

However, I have proved to my own satisfaction that the landing loads are not
the main problem, the braking loads are.

Fitting a one piece gear will not help the braking loads at all and will be
only a minimal improvement.

Cheers

Alister
