[rebel-builders] strut fairings

[Eric Fogelin]

I just made my wing strut fairings. I made small versions that do not cover
the rows of attach fitting bolts. I'm on amphib floats, so the extra drag of
the bolts is not an issue.

First I made a paper template, then scrap aluminum...then final (maybe
twice). Same template in reverse worked well on other side. A similar shape
would work for a longer bolt-covering fairing.

I uploaded two pictures in the Elite Builders Fairing section showing the
templates and final install. The photo of the template should give you a
good start on creating your own.

I can try and scan the paper template and email. Let me know.

I uploaded images of the template as well as an outline to the Elite Fairing
section. Both images have scales to help if you try to print the images for
cutting your test template. I would still start with scrap light cardboard
and scrap .016 aluminum.

I had some spare time while I wait for my first flight. Had my FAA
inspection a few days ago and I'm the proud owner of an Airworthiness
Certificate.

So, I made the lower wing strut fairings that touch the fuselage. Wasn't
planning to, as the float rigging doesn't draw attention to the lack of
fairing. But, it does look better with the lower wing strut fairing in
place.

I placed a photo of the fairing and the template in the Elite - Fairing
section.

First flight Sunday or Monday.

Whoever posted the strut fairing pictures I'd like to ask are you flying
and if so how do you keep those rubber channels from blowing loose? I have
the same rubbers on my fairings and I have had a hell of a time keeping
them in place. I've tried glueing them on with everything I can think of
including pro-seal nothing has worked for more than a few hours.

Hi Ron No I never got any replies on that thread but I have had a bit of
sucess keeping them on since then by using a strip of duct tape on the
inside that overlaps the rubber and the fairing. Actually the strut
fairings don't come loose that often but I have the same rubbers on my wing
root fairings at the front where it buts up against the windshield and they
come loose regularly. Scared the hell out of me the first time, made a
precautionary landing just to figure out what the heck was going on.

LOL. I've used rubber channel for wire chafe protection in numerous places
behind the panel, where I've attached it will a dab of clear RTV every inch
or so... but with inconsistent results. So I'm curious what others have used
at the fairings, where the channel is exposed to more forces than it is
behind my panel... I hope! :-)

Hi Drew !

I just opened up the rubber channel & brushed in some
rubber cement (from Staples) - also put some on the fairing.
That solved the problem !

You might be able to get deeper channel from Spaenaur ...

LOL ! Know what you mean about the scare - had mine
come loose on the wing root fairing years ago. It banged
on the cabin roof, and I thought the engine was throwing

Sorry Drew, I missed this whole thread.

I posted the fairing pictures and used contact cement to hold the rubber
channel in place. They are still holding strong after 45 hours of flight.

Thanks Eric and Bob I tried contact cement but I probably didn't prep the
metal well enough. The duct tape is holding for now so I'll wait till it
fails and try contact cement again. Today was a beautiful day for flying I
got out for an hour of checking out the snow drifts north of goderich and
spotting a deer and some turkeys.
