Sorry Clay !

I hear the larger Lowrance is better....

Most of the Rebels here are using the AvMap EKP-4 -
7" colour - great in sunlight .... display vertical or
horizontal - changes easily... Lots of suppliers -

Clay,
I was just about to buy the Lowrance until I read a few reviews on it and looked at it. The display seemed awfully pixelated to me. I happened to be at Oshkosh and walked by the AvMap display. I was sold on it as soon as I saw it. Very good display and nice and big for my failing eyes. Only thing I don't like is its need to be aircraft powered. But not that big of deal for installing in a Rebel. I use mine in my non-electric Cahmp and need to carry a battery pack. It is very easy to read in bright sunlight. I hadn't even heard of the AvMap before buying one. Sorry to hear you already purchased the Lowrance. Maybe you can swap it out for something different since the screen is hard to see.
Good Luck,
Keith R661

[rebel-builders] GPS

Post by Ken » Sun Feb 19, 2012 4:55 pm

Two years ago Canada Maps was included with the 2000c in the price
advertised in COPA newspaper if you purchased from the Canadian Aircraft
Spruce outlet. That detail was not advertised but it was their policy
and might still be. So the USA maps (DVD) was in the 2000c box and a
separate box of Canada Maps cd's was included.

On the 2000c you push the menu button twice to get the screen setting menu.

With the 2000c I have to run in the 6 mi. scale or all the towers do not
display. When flying low with great vis it won't show all the towers if
I increase the scale to show a larger area. Some of the really large
towers will show on the 10 or 20 mi scale but not the smaller ones. I'm
told the Garmin units are similar?? Lowrance is aware of this as it
really should be a user selectable option IMO. No problem if you always
fly high but I enjoy the scenery down low. One other annoyance is that
it does not show built up areas shaded, so you don't get an idea of how
large a city or town is like you do by looking at a map.

The large screen is nice but it means that running on batteries is very
very limited and the screen resolution is not correspondingly higher
which means fairly large pixels. Probably about the same resolution as
the 600c ?? The screen is best viewed straight on as it is not very
good when viewed from more than 20 or 30 degrees to either side. My
2000c mounts on the swivel mount and sits below the throttle. Price was
right and the included 512mb terrain card has a fair bit of room for
Canada Maps as long as you leave out all the little streams which are
useless anyway in the airplane. With the antenna on the dashboard, it
has not hicupped even once in a couple of hundred hours.

Therefore I needed a 600C size, vertical display unit. I have no trouble
seeing the display in sunlight - must be a setting. I like the set-up and
it does the job I want. The only thing that pissed me off was that I had
to buy the Canadian topo maps in addition to the price of the unit. I was
told by Aircraft Spruce that I could exchange the US maps for the Canadian

the US gives it away. Another classic example of our government working on

Mike, I liked the 600C. The display was good once I got I got it set up.
If I had some room on my panel in front of me I would have kept the unit -
the price is certainly good ($499.00 including the Topo Canada map- now with
a less a $50 factory rebate) but I've decided to exchange the unit for the
2000C only because of the bigger display.

Drew,
I was very interested in getting the Lowrance 2000C also. I was attending Oshkosh and specifically went to buy one. Well, after looking at it and doing my usual procrastinating I happened upon the AvMap display. They have several units but the one I liked was the AvMap EKP-IV. I was instantly impressed with it. It has a MUCH clearer screen and I noticed it in lots of homebuilts at the show. It is more expensive than the Lowrance and its battery life isn't the best either. It is mainly supposed to be plugged into a cigarette lighter plug. I bought one and am totally happy with it. Just another option if you haven't made up your mind. Oh, you can buy an add-on to recieve XM weather also if you are interested it that option.
Good luck,
Keith

I agree as long as you don't want to run it on internal AA batteries.
Even NiMH rechargeables are only good for a few dozen minutes. The black
and white version is much easier on batteries.

Also check with Aircraft Spruce Canada (not the website) as mine came
with USA and also Canada Maps software disks for no extra charge. That
has never been advertised anywhere that I've noticed but the Canadian
store volunteered the info when I enquired about the unit.

Hi Keith !

I'm with you ! I originally though the Lowrance units were clear
& easy to read - until I saw the AvMap !! Many Rambling Rebels
have had AvMaps .... they are very easy to read, even in sunlight,
and are one of the few GPS units that allows a GPS glideslope
approach !! (Not that anyone would ever need/use that feature .... ;-) )
The screen is over twice the size of the little Garmins, and can
switch instantly from vertical to landscape display, for easy
mounting, or better route planning.

The battery life is tiny - it's really just for backup. They are meant
to be plugged into a cigarette lighter ... like most others.

We've been using the AvMap, and it's grand-daddy, for over
15 years - just delighted with it ! The new 600 series Garmins
have almost all the same features -- for 3 times the price !!!! ;-)

One definite suggestion from the meeting - get the largest
colour screen you can ! It's much easier to read in turbulence,
especially as we age .....

Bob,
That is the MAIN reason I purchased the AvMap, its clear screen. I was having a heck of a time trying to see the smaller screen on my handheld Garmin. On floats and a bumpy day....forget it. I couldn't see the darn screen. And as you said...I can see the AvMap screen good in the daylight unlike the other GPS's I had been using.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I was at aircraft spruce in brantford a
while ago looking at the lowrance, the avmap and the bendix king av8or. I
was disappointed that the salesman didn't seem very well informed about the
different units and they don't have any demonstrators. Without powering
them up it's just a guess which one would be best. I thought the av8or was
a little too small and the avmap too expensive for no more features than
the lowrance but now I think I'll wait and try to find somewhere that I can
try them out side by side.

Hi Drew !

It pays to shop a bit ! If we have fly-in Rebels at the next
Builders Meeting, you can likely see an AvMap in action.

The last prices I saw for the AvMap were about $1,400 CAD ...
suspect you can do better with some digging.

DREW: You might also want to check out the AvMap Geo Pilot II Plus. It is
smaller and weighs less than the Lowrance 2000C but has the same screen size
(5" diag.). Screen resolution is the same for both at 320 x 240. Color is
256 for the 2000C and 65K for the II Plus. The II Plus has an LI
rechargeable battery vs. 4 AA's for the 2000C.

Most pricing in the US for the 2000C is about $700 vs. $1200 for the
GeoPilot II Plus and $1500 for the EKP-IV.

I bought the GeoPilot II Plus at Oshkosh for $999 USD including tax. Have
not used it yet so can't comment on how it works.

GPS question: When I purchased my Garmin 296 a few years ago
it came with only vague details of the Canadian Provinces. Because
I do a lot of fihhing around the Sioux Lookout area, I was forced
to spend an extra $150. for a chip for more detailed information.
Do any of the newer GPS's come with full detail of canada, lakes,
rivers, trails, and streams?

Thank you.
