Accident

Just saw the following on the NTSB web site... you've fixed this kind of
damage before haven't you Wayne? Sure hope they didn't do to much damage.

Mike

On July 10, 2000, approximately 1600 mountain daylight time, a kit-built
amphibious Rebel, N6317Y, registered to and operated by the second pilot as
a 14 CFR Part 91 instructional flight, experienced a control system failure
during the descent for landing on a waterway located about 10 miles
northeast of Libby, Montana, and collided with the water. Visual
meteorological conditions prevailed at the time and no flight plan was
filed. The aircraft was substantially damaged. The flight instructor and
private pilot were not injured. The flight originated from the Libby
Airport about one and a half hours prior to the accident. The flight
instructor reported that he had just sold the aircraft to the second pilot,
and this was the first instructional flight for his seaplane rating. During
the descent for landing, with the second pilot at the controls, the
aircraft began to turn to the left. The flight instructor took over the
controls at about 20 feet above the water level and applied right rudder
control to correct for the left turn. When the flight instructor applied
pressure to the right rudder pedal, there was no rudder response. The
flight instructor continued with the landing and the aircraft collided with
the water in a left turn. The left side float partially submerged and the
aircraft cartwheeled onto the right wing. After the aircraft was recovered,
the flight instructor, who is also an airframe and powerplant mechanic,
reported that the right side rudder control cable had pulled out of the
Nicopress sleeve.

Geert Frank

accident

Post by Geert Frank » Fri Feb 17, 2012 5:57 pm

Hi all! I would prefer to come out with some more pleasant messages,
but......Found a fax this morning from my brother, that lives in Holland.
He had faxed me an article out of todays newspaper: A Murphy Rebel had
crashed near the Dutch/Belgian border and killed its pilot. I had talked to
the man(62) and knew about his machine. It was built very well and was
powered by a Lycoming 150 HP engine. The pilot had been talking to "air
traffic control" before the crash and police and fire department units had
been alerted. The only other thing of significance was the fact that
eyewitnesses nearby heard the engine "sputter and finally quit altogether".
I will of course continue to monitor the situation and get more precise
information. Newspapers in Holland are no different from anywhere else and
often do not get the story straight especially where it pertains to
aviation. It is of course up to the owner/monitor of this website to give
you more info or keep it to myself. Regards, Geert
