hearing loss & head sets

Post by Charlie Starr » Sun Feb 19, 2012 3:56 pm

Having spent a number of years in a Convair 600 (that's a CV-240 with Rolls Royce Dart engines), and having the company remove most of the soundproofing from the cockpit - I'll be one of the first to recommend anything that will reduce noise. I'm paying a price now - with very noticeable hearing loss. It's amazing how we think we're bullet proof when we are young! We used to fly DC-3 with the windows open and used speakers - no headsets (except when shooting 4 course range approaches - who's old enough to remember these?).

My recommendation is to get the best headset you can and wear plugs when on the ramp. And don't listen to the BOOM BOXES that kids have in their cars now.
