[rebel-builders]Rebel - Flaperons Question

Post by Bob Patterson » Sun Feb 19, 2012 11:56 am

Hi Tim !

Happy St. Paddy's !! Pilots .... drink .... ??? !!! :-)

Save your energy !! There's no need to flush rivet.
There won't be any benefit, anyway, because:
The rivet heads get covered by tapes, and the whole
leading edge of the flapperon is covered with a sheet of
1/2" (or so) thick polyester batting (from a fabric store),
before you put on the final covering of PolyFiber.

The batting squishes down to about 1/8" or less,
and is needed to allow the gases from the Poly-Brush
to escape sideways, preventing pinholes in the finish.
It also gives a nice smooth finish to the front, and prevents
minor dents later .... or hides current ones. ;-)

As far as the trailing edge - you want it tight, as a gap
seal. You can put a wide strip of Teflon Tape on top of
the finished aileron if needed - gliders all do this. You can
run a bench saw cut about 1" deep all along a 12 ft piece
of 2 x 4, slide it over the trailing edge, and gently bend
upward - IF NEEDED - on final assembly, for more
clearance.

We are moving forward with the building of the Rebel flaperons and a fork in
the road has presented itself.
There is a line of rivets across the top of the flaperon spar. According to
the
manual these are to be the 1/8" x 3/16" pulled rivets.

The fork in the road is this: Is there an advantage to use flush rivets
here? I
know that some builders have run into a clearance problem with the top of
the flaperon and the trailing edge of the wing skin when the flaperon is in
the
full "up" position. Using a flush rivet would allow for a little more room
in this
area. So that is the question.

Is it worthwhile to dimple and install flush rivets across the top of the
flaperon spar so as to minimize any interference with the rear of the wing
skin?
