Hey Bruce, finally thawing out there now, eh? Yeah, it's interesting how
all
this global warming hype got full traction a couple months ago when winter
started late out east. Meanwhile, out west here, we were freezing our n_ts
off, getting snowed on, and darn near blown away a few times. But I
understand things are back to normal now, with it warming up nicely here,
and now they (most of you guys on this list) are/were freezing their b_lls
off, as it should be. As for global warming, I can only wish... LOL

We had great weather last weekend, and went out to Harrison Lake last Sat.
It was really warm that day, and temps hit +17C (63F). But I discovered
another brake leak on my amphibs, same as last time, which I fixed by
changing an O ring. I will be heading out to the hangar after lunch to
take
it apart again and see what gives.

No, still just have 2 tires per side on the dock..., maybe will get some
more one of these years.

BTW, was looking at Google Satellite map (not even Google Earth), and
zoomed
into my bay at Harrison where my cabin is. To my surprise, I found both my
Rebel and my boat moored there at my dock. Hmmm, wonder what level of
detail
we are going to see in a few years...

I Can remember the first few dockings with my new Rebel 1800 amphib, and
it
takes about that long to make a dent...or two. I was used to a wheeled
plane
and if you dent a wheel plane you usually have did some real damage. Just
do
the best you can and and just accept normal wear and tear. It really isn't
a
big deal on floats once you start seeing other float planes that have been
used for anything but show planes. You stop counting the dents after
awhile
and just enjoy the fun.

Walter,
have you ever put any bumbers (tires) on your dock at Lake Harrision yet?
:-) As of last week before the warm front Priest lake was frozen from
one
side to the other! I had never seen that before. So much for global
warming.

Go ahead and paint her bright and shiny!
You'll never notice small dents on the wing.
You may notice them on places you inspect up close or that are in your
normal line of sight like the top of the stab or the leading edge by the
fuel caps but even then there are so many rivet heads that a lot of
minor bruises are effectively camouflaged. I do have one small dent
hidden under some bondo but it was by the door and I didn't want to be
reminded every time I opened the door...

There are guys here that know how to shrink metal and take out bruises
but I'd suggest trying a wooden mallet and a steel backing dolly. A
steel hammer and steel dolly definately stretches the metal and makes a
dish.

I'm a little surprised a dropped cleco dents the skin. You sure you
didn't
throw it out of frustration with something? :) The thing I had trouble
with was turning the wing over and accidentally letting it down with a
cleco hitting 2x4 spacer blocks on the table -- it pushes the cleco over
sideways and puts a smiley in the skin. I found best to leave such
dents,
as trying to dolly them flat just expands the metal making things worse.
Fortunately, just a couple and they'll not show unless I was crazy enf to
go for some dark shiny paint job.

Congratulations Mike Betti for turning all that aluminum into an
airplane.
I think you started just a little before me, and I recall you zipping

[rebel-builders] Float docks

Post by jean.poirier » Sun Feb 19, 2012 11:52 am

Put a abrasive cutting wheel on your circular saw... and make a little of smoke!
And then just wood deck screw (in a flat washer) to fix them on the docks. At
least it work for the boat at the fishing camp!

[rebel-builders] Float docks

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Sun Feb 19, 2012 11:52 am

Walter...do it the way I SHOULD have done the ones on the finger docks of my
air lift dock assembly, Take a couple feet of cut off from a wide tie down
strap/old firehose/seatbelt etc. Loop it around the tire and then lag bolt
with washers to the docks deck. This way they can be pulled up and set on
the dock for ice in...oh yah..not an issue you lucky bugger. My dock gets
pulled down in the ice thanks to the tires. This is an easy way to do it.
Just wish I had of taken note of some other's docks before I did mine, as I
bolted right to the sides. My tires are all Goodyear Eagle 16R245's that
Daryl was nice enough to burn off on the T-Bird. 10 Inches wide so lots of
room to reach inside and lag with a big washer to the side of the dock. Just
take a drill and drill thru the side wall where the bolts will go, get the
bolts started thru before holding in place and then ratchet them into the
dock side. Also drill holes in the tire tread so the water can exchange and
keep them a little cleaner looking.

my past attempts with a hacksaw and then chain saw.

[rebel-builders] Float docks

Post by Walter Klatt » Sun Feb 19, 2012 11:52 am

What I have seen some others do, is just cut about an 8 inch part of one
side wall and the tire, and then attach that piece to the top of the dock.
That should also allow the tire to be flipped up on the dock if you want.
But like I said, my challenge was just cutting the tire. May give Jean's
suggestion a try.

Good news with the amphib brake problem. Looks like it is not the O-ring
this time, but just the line attachment fitting. I turned the brass collar
and tried it again, so will see if that fixed it. From past experience, I
know they can be tricky, and you have to keep them very straight and tighten
them just right. If it leaks again, will just cut off the end, and put in a
new one.

Yeah, getting the tires is the easy part, but how to you attach them to
the
dock? Still remember many years ago, trying to cut them in half, to make 2
bumpers per tire, and then trying to nail/screw the suckers on. I even
tried
using my chain saw (bad idea) and all I did was wreck my chain. So with a
full tire, how do you spread the tire enough to get inside there to put in
a
nail or screw. And doing all this, with the tire half under water. I'm
sure
there is a way, but...

Yeah, your docks were very first class, especially that air one...

Hey Bruce, finally thawing out there now, eh? Yeah, it's interesting how
all
this global warming hype got full traction a couple months ago when
winter
started late out east. Meanwhile, out west here, we were freezing our
n_ts
off, getting snowed on, and darn near blown away a few times. But I
understand things are back to normal now, with it warming up nicely here,
and now they (most of you guys on this list) are/were freezing their
b_lls
off, as it should be. As for global warming, I can only wish... LOL

We had great weather last weekend, and went out to Harrison Lake last
Sat.

To my surprise, I found both
my
Rebel and my boat moored there at my dock.

It really
isn't
a
big deal on floats once you start seeing other float planes that have
been
used for anything but show planes. You stop counting the dents after
awhile
and just enjoy the fun.

Walter,
have you ever put any bumbers (tires) on your dock at Lake Harrision yet?
:-) As of last week before the warm front Priest lake was frozen from
one
side to the other! I had never seen that before. So much for global
warming.

Put a abrasive cutting wheel on your circular saw... and make a little of
smoke!
And then just wood deck screw (in a flat washer) to fix them on the docks.
At
least it work for the boat at the fishing camp!

You'll never notice small dents on the wing.
You may notice them on places you inspect up close or that are in your

fuel caps but even then there are so many rivet heads that a lot of
minor bruises are effectively camouflaged. I do have one small dent

Congratulations Mike Betti for turning all that aluminum into an

I think you started just a little before me, and I recall you zipping
