[rebel-builders] RE: Wing cut-outs for fuel tanks.

Bill: The way I interpret the manual and having built two sets of wings this
way is this:-- The side cut out allows for two rows of rivets to join the
wing skin with the tank skin just outside of the last solid tank rib and
rear bulkheads on the top skin, where as the back side allows only one row
of rivets to join the tank and wing skin just past the rear bulkheads on the
bottom skin. This is so the tank skin is resting only on the solid rib and
rear bulkheads to help create better sealing. The double row following rib
direction or cord of the wing is necessary to carry the compression loads
during flight. The tank skins are placed over the uncut wing skins during
the build process and all is drilled at one time making the wing skin cutout
easier to see after disassembly. I hope this helps some what and is not to
confusing. There are no actual dimensions as the cut outs are determined by
maintaining the 5/16 edge distance shown in the manual. Bob J

cut-outs for the wing tanks? I have e-mailed and phoned MAM with no reply
in the past five days. I need to know the location of the lines parallel
to
the tank bulkheads for both the top and bottom skins. I don't find it very
clear at all in the manual. It is shown in figure 10.10.12 section 0.10
Wing Assembly. The diagram doesn't show the line of rivet holes for the
tank bulkheads as far as I can see. Does anyone have an approximate
distance from the leading or trailing edge of the skin?

Hi Bob,
Your explanation eases my mind a bit as I have already cut the top skin but
am still a bit confused about the exact location of the trim line parallel
to the bulkheads on the bottom skin. The diagram shows one row of holes
above the stringer holes and in actual fact the line of rivets is below the
stringer. I will check again when I get back at in a couple of days, working
nights right now. I was worried that I should have trimmed it at the tank
bulkhead but what you say makes sense now. I just find these drawings a bit
vague to say the least. You sure can't accuse them of giving you too much
info. Thanks everyone for your help.

Don't forget that you want 5/16" rivet edge distance on the wing skin
PLUS room for a proseal filet around the tank. A few guys have run into
trouble trying to install the wing skin after sealing the tank. 119R had
the retrofit wet tank kit and I wasn't happy until I made slightly
larger tank skins than were supplied.
