[rebel-builders] Leaky roof?

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Sun Feb 19, 2012 11:38 am

I've never bothered. Only had one instance of water getting in this year and
it didn't come thru the cabin roof..... during the monsoon and 150KPH winds
that almost cartwheeled her down the lake.

DJK sat on the air lift at the lake for over 2 months this summer (well
other than when that Walter guy kicked me off it! LOL) and it even sits nose
down/tail high when on it...which would give more time for water to find
it's way in ..compared to say tail dragger angle. It rained darn near every
day it seemed...and all was well.

Is it common to use a sealant (proseal, Silkaflex etc.) when riveting the
roof panel to the root ribs? It seems like if any water runs under the
root
fairings it would leak into the cabin through that joint if it's not
sealed.
Thanks.

OK thanks Wayne. I won't bother either then. Save messing around with goo
again for when I build floats.

[rebel-builders] Leaky roof?

Post by Walter Klatt » Sun Feb 19, 2012 11:38 am

Yeah, mine has sat out in the rain many, many times and no water in the
cabin. I only used the chromate epoxy as per instructions, no extra sealant,
except around windows, of course.

[rebel-builders] Leaky roof?

Post by Jesse Jenks » Sun Feb 19, 2012 11:38 am

Thanks Walter,
I was worried about that joint because of all the flutes. I figured it
wouldn't seal that well. I had to actually cut some notches where the curve
is extreme at the leading edge and my fluting pliers didn't do the trick.
There are actually a bunch of places water could come in through the root
rib. I guess the root fairings with weather stripping are doing a good job
of kepping water out. Maybe I will just put some sealant where my notches
are, or wait and see. I could always goop it later on, but you know what the
old farmer says: When it's raining it's too wet to fix it, and when it's dry
it's good as any man's roof!

[rebel-builders] Leaky roof?

Post by Walter Klatt » Sun Feb 19, 2012 11:38 am

Yes, I would seal off any holes or openings. I also had the rubber seals on
the ends of the fairings, so that probably helped keep any water out there.
Be sure everything around your windshield is sealed.
