[rebel-builders] S/M FUS 331 Reinforcement

Post by Robert and Olga Johnson » Sun Feb 19, 2012 11:13 am

Hi Tom: A while ago I posted pictures in SR/Moose landing gear section
titled Redesigned Fus 331. This is a new gear fitting to capture the top of
the gear leg. Very similar to what you are doing except the bolt is only
subjected to "shear loads". There is a drawing (ACAD) available. We had
these new fittings made at 1 1/2" wide are an easy bolt in replacement.
Again, these should compensate for a less then perfect landing. - Bob J

For those interested, I just uploaded a few photos of a modification I
made
to my FUS 331 gear mount. I put them in section 124 S/M-Modifications.
It's
an attempt to reinforce the area around the bolt. The one gear failure we
all saw photos of showed that this bolt sheared through the thinnest
section
of FUS 331 after the failure of the outer gear mount bolt/nut assy. Most
of us have gone to the next larger bolt AN8 which further decreases the
wall
thickness where the failure occurred. I also remember someone mentioning
that they are seeing some wear/enlargement of this hole with time. My
belief (hope) is that the steel clamps around this area will minimize wear
and lesson the chance of catastrophic failure with my less than perfect
landings.

[rebel-builders] S/M FUS 331 Reinforcement

Bob:
Yes, I did see your design of Fus 331. Nice work. I'm not quite as
ambitious, plus I found a cheap source of the stainless tubing; so, I tried
to make a simple reinforcement. FWIW, Darryl Murphy commented positively on
it. If anyone wants to do the same, I can get more of the tubing and could
supply at cost.

[rebel-builders] S/M FUS 331 Reinforcement

Post by Richard Wampach » Sun Feb 19, 2012 11:13 am

Yes Tom I would be interested in that tubing for my Moose SR-108. Is
this the design I saw posted just a few days ago on the web-site?

Please contact me at the address below, and we won't have to bother
every one else with our business.

Thanks,

Dick Wampach rwampach@comcast.net
