There is an interesting article "OUR ALLY, THE MAGNETIC COMPASS! at www.avionicswest.com/articles.htm. It also discusses vertical card compasses. There is an article in the December 1999 issue of "The Aviation Consumer" titled "A BETTER CLASS OF COMPASS". Both articles discuss the problems with vertical card compasses.
