Super Rebel gear tip and steel bushings

Post by Mike Kimball » Sun Feb 19, 2012 10:52 am

I talked to Stephane at Murphy yesterday with a couple of quick questions
that might be of interest to everyone.

1. When looking at the gear legs where they are captured just prior to
exiting the fuselage I noticed that the bottom fitting does not seat
completely against the upper fitting. There is maybe 1/32 or perhaps as
much as 1/16 gap. The upper and lower fittings are tight against the gear
leg on the edges but I can see light between the gear leg and the lower
fitting in the middle. Stephane says - no problem. Sounds just right. I
figure (and I assume it's why Murphy's position is that it's fine) that its
better to have it the way mine are than to try and get the lower fitting to
seat fully on the upper fitting and inadvertently remove too much material
so that the gear is not clamped properly.

2. I also asked if there was any corrosion concern with the 4130 steel
bushings that go inside of the brass fittings for attaching the flaps and
ailerons. He said - nope. Use a bit of lithium grease or similar during
assembly. The act of operating the flaps and ailerons will also tend to
prevent rust from building up. I didn't pursue this issue beyond that but I
would keep an eye on this if your plane suffered the worst thing that could
happen to a plane - disuse. I accidentally left two bushings in place for a
long time (at least a couple of years) since the first time I mounted them
for a trial fitting and they were rusted and needed pliers to remove. It
was comforting to note that the rust was minimal, they came out easily, and
cleaned up just fine.
