[rebel-builders] Rebel tailwheel

Ian the chains should take it just shy of the break out. The last thing you
want is it breaking out when you are trying to steer. To make it break out
you generally need a good tap of the brake to make the tailwheel turn a
little further than the rudder pedals will take it and then it will kick out
and let the airplane swing around.

G'day

I am looking for some advice please.

I have replaced the standard Murphy tailwheel with a Scott 3200, but I
don't
have any instructions on how it should be adjusted. Come to think of it I
never found any instructions for the Murphy wheel in the manual either.

What I have done is adjust the springs/chains so that there is just a
little
slack in them and the wheel moves through the full range quite OK. But
what
I don't understand is just when the "break out" should occur? Should the
wheel be pulled through to the "break out" position by the springs/chains
or
should the wheel stop short of breaking out when the rudder hits the
stops?
Is the wheel designed to be forced over the break out position by turning
the aircraft or should it be operated by the springs/chains.

I hope that made some sense. It seems rather difficult to explain!

Regards

Ian

G'day Wayne

Thanks for the information. I was not sure whether the wheel needed to be
pulled into the break out position or not. Now that I know it is a matter of
using the brakes to overcome the break out, all is explained!
That is the way that I have it set up now, so all should be OK then.

All I need now is some nice weather so that I can get out and test it.

Regards and thanks

Ian

Hi Rod !

Adding a pneumatic wheel & tire would make the stock tailwheel
pretty civilized.

I saw that page at AS :
http://www.aircraftspruce.com/menus/lg/ ... scott.html

$2,809 USD !!!!! I don't think so !

As Wayne said, the Alaska Bushwheel folks have bought the rights
to the design, and they are MUCH more reasonable:
http://www.aircraftspruce.com/menus/lg/ ... askan.html

$975 USD complete ! Still stiff, but barely bearable ...

All pretty expensive, when you can buy a similar double arm
pnuematic caster from Princess Auto for about $ 50 -- I'm sure you
could add the steering mechanism for just a bit less than an
extra $ 925 USD !!! ;-)

Still think the Murphy Elite tailwheel might be less $$$ ...
