OK, Wayne, gotta ask this. Do you carry a magnifying glass with you all the
time in the shop? Yup, sad to say, but I guess 50% of the washers on mine
are all wrong...

Realized while working away today I do something subconsciously (or possibly
automatically is a better word). Guess I've been doing it so long I dont'
give it a second thought anymore.

It may have been discussed here before, but you do realize there is a right
and a wrong way to install a washer...right? They are punched out of a
sheet....creating a sharp edge and a rounded edge. The rounded edge should
always go against the surface you are bolting together as the sharp edge
will cut into the alum and cause a stress point. Just thought I'd share that
tidbit of knowledge on a slow Thursday night.

The rounded edge side has a different shine/look to it. Easy to detect once
you've been looking purposely. I started doing this years back after
disassembling airplanes and finding a nice round "cut me here" line the
diameter of the washers. This imbedded line is from the sharp edge of the
washer getting forced into the alum.

On the worst offenders you can often also feel the sharp edge on one
side of the washer. Some don't have much edge but others do. I have also
found a few bolts with bumps or edges under the heads. They need a more
careful inspection to catch but you will notice the scored aluminum
after removing one of them...

Somebody needs to post the washer info on a Van's site, it will send those
engineer types into a frenzy ... maybe that was the cause of some structural
failures ... Just joking, but now I'll not put one upside down washer on any
aircraft (or sawhorse) again!

Great, now I will take every washer, nut, and bolt to the scotchbrite wheel
before installing them ... and maybe install every one with proseal type-A.
That's Proseal type-A, not Type-A installing Proseal!
