The newer models of the Val have a battery in them to hold the frequency. I
believe you can also upgrade the older ones to do the same.

Other problem I find with the VAL is sooner or later that little flip-flop
toggle switch causes you fits...doesn't it Garry!

only complaint with them is that when power is removed they do not hold

last freq. but revert to 121.9 and 121.7 on the flip flops. No problem to
again select the desired freq. when re-powering for next flight. Size is
about the same as ICOM and price is much less.

I've had good luck with the VAL-COM units. They're about the same
size as the Icoms, but have a better display - lighted tubes that dim
automatically at night. Same flip-flop channel setup, but with flip
switch rather than push switch. Big attraction was price - $650 or
less .... and fabricated wiring harness for an extra $75.

My Valcom 720 flipflop switch did fail. I don't know how old the unit is
but it probably isn't any older than FOKM. BobP would have to remember
when he put it in. They are special switches of course and not something
most of us would try to replace by ourselves so accordingly expensive.
Probably not supposed to anyway since it is radio gear. I did not know
about the battery bit. Will check that out. Thanks.

My valcom usually works well except about once a year it blows a fuse
and/or a diode for no apparent reason. Luckily the local FM radio repair
guy will fix it for about $20. I've also replaced the fuse myself but it's
an oddball and I think I spent more time tracking it down than it would
have taken to just get it fixed. The valcom is pretty long and only fits at
the bottom of the panel and it still sticks out about 1/2" if you have a
cut back firewall I don't think it will fit at all. For a really compact
radio that I've read good reviews on check out the micro-air radio and
transponder from austrailia.
