Hi Mike

The big AC43 book has a table of wire size needed against current and
distance of run that I've used. Just choose the closest smaller no gauge
(thicker wire) to what the graph shows. You'll need the current required by
the device and the voltage and the length of wire run between the bus and
the load to come up with the correct size wire for your installation.

what are people using for circuit breaker or fuse for their landing lights
and taxi lights, and what wire size are they using, i have found many
examples from others web sites and books ?? sae question for pitot tube if
heated ?

one example is as follows

landing light 15amp cb 16 ga wire

taxi light 15amp cb 16 ga wire

pitot tube 10amp cb 18 ga wire

FWIW I figure 14 ga is required for a 15 amp fuse
Technically I believe you are only supposed to go to a 12 amp fuse with
16 ga wire but as long as the wires aren't tightly bundled perhaps most
inspectors don't get too upset about that??

18 ga for a 10 amp fuse
I increase that to 16 ga if the run is long and I want to reduce the
voltage drop. One can always go to heavier wire for a given fuse but
realistically I didn't find cases where that was really needed.

22 ga for a 5 amp fuse

So 18 ga is fine for any light that runs on a 10 amp fuse or CB. 16 is
also fine for that. The Aeroelectric book shows landing lights wired
with 18 ga and a 7 amp fuse. I'm running two 50 watt halogens off of one
10 amp ATO fuse and it seems fine so far.

Pitot heat is less certain. My little cessna unit draws 7 amp in my
basement. However I suspect it may draw more than twice that when cooled
by actual cold rain or icing. I have been intending to measure the
current draw of mine while the pitot is imersed in ice water however I
think I wired it with 16 ga (might have been 18ga.) on a 10 amp fuse for
the time being. It may need more but OTOH if if is subjected to
significant icing conditions then it won't really matter whether it
works or not as the Rebel will be falling out of the sky like a frozen
ice cube anyway... Since mine is off a cessna I guess a good approach
would be to just find out what cessna used.
