Windshield Over Firewall

Post by Lonnie Benson » Fri Feb 17, 2012 5:39 pm

Chuck; You are right to be worried. On my Rebel the instructions call for an alum. extension. I have purchased, from Aircraft Spruce, some fireproof material which I will glue to the engine side of the extension.

Subject: Windshield Over Firewall

Hi All,
On the Elite or Rebels that move the firewall back 3 inches, the windshield appears to overlap the vertical firewall. Checking my Elite manual, there is an extension piece added for the windshield to rest on. I presume the something similar is necessary on a Rebel having the firewall moved back. My question and concern is that it seems this overlapping piece should be designed to the same criteria as the firewall both in thickness and material (stainless steel?) since breaching it would provide a direct path for smoke or fire from the engine compartment into the cockpit in a real bad place: at the base of the windshield. Maybe some other sort of thermal barrier needs to be put there as well. Haven't checked the material or thickness of the piece provided with the Elite kit since that part is boxed up now. Perhaps only part of the windshield flange overlaps the firewall and this is a non-problem? Any thoughts or is this an imaginary problem since I haven't constructed this area yet?

Would that be "Fibrefrax" material ?? If so, that is a VERY good choice !
There is a Rebel here with an aluminum firewall, with 2 layers of Fiberfrax
glued onto it, that was passed by our inspectors as airworthy !!! (After
a year of paperwork & testing,.... but now OK ! )

This is great stuff to use for fire protection, and also acts as a heat
and sound damper ..... It is usually glued with a Silica adhesive, which
is also fire resistant. This combination is sometimes used to line blast
furnaces !!

Everybody with the firewall moved back should at least look at putting
this stuff under the "winshield overhang" area....
