Dimples
I am in the process of finalizing the stabilizer for my Elite. The manual
calls for dimpling all of the leading edge holes and using tapered rivets. My
question:
Regardless of whether I use a "Vise-Grip" type of dimpler, or the "Dies On A
Nail" dimpler pulled with a hand rivet puller provided by MAM, the holes in
the leading edge ribs seem to be enlarged as a result of dimpling. Before
dimpling, they are a snug fit when I insert a rivet. Once dimpled, the hole seems to
have a fair amount of play when I insert the rivet. Is this normal? Will the
rivet expand during the "pull" to fill the hole, or do I need to be concerned
about using a larger diameter rivet?

Dimples
Do your dimpling first with the 3/32 or #40 hole. Then do your final drilling to #30 after it is dimpled.

If you use the same MAM dimpler as me you cannot get the nail through a #40
hole to pull the dimple.
I think if you drill to 1/8" you can then dimple and the resultant hole is
close to #30 ???
Is that right guy's ??

FWIW----There is a very good article in this months Kitplanes magazine on
the subject. In the article is says to drill to recommended rivet size then
dimple the hole. I would assume they know what they are talking about it
gives reasons for doing it this way. If you need the article I will scan

At #30, the rivet was snug. Once dimpled, the fit seems sloppy.

Avex rivets fill them fine as far as I can tell. I wouldn't worry about
it. Sometimes I drill to 1/8 and dimple but that is only about 3 thou
smaller. I do find I get better results using a nail that is close to
the hole size. Some of the nail type dimplers sold for #30 holes use
small diameter nails that don't center the dies very well. Some of them
also dimple much deeper than necessary which of course makes the hole
larger than necessary. It is easy to make your own shallow female die
just by drilling into the back side of the female die and that is what I
use when using a nail type dimpler.

Dimples
I have been using a hand squeezer for dimpling where there is access. I just
drill to #40 then dimple both parts at the same time. This allows the two
parts to align perfectly. I find that when I dimple the parts separately the
dimples don't align very well, and there is some space between the parts
after riveting. I de-burr at the end, along with all the other holes,
usually by running a file along the row on the inside. Outside usually
doesn't need/get much attention. Not textbook, but it gets good results for
me. Where I can't fit the hand squeezer I use the nail type dimpler. I drill
those holes to #30 before dimpling and there the rivets definitely don't fit
snug. I tried just drilling out to the size of the nail before dimpling, but
it's a pain because the nail gets mangled by the jaws of the rivet puller,
and is difficult to get through the hole.
