one wing finished!

Post by Jesse Jenks » Sat Feb 18, 2012 1:43 pm

After a 10 hour shift I got the top main skin riveted on to complete my
first wing. Wow there are a lot of rivets on top of the wing! Some of you
may have noticed that I didn't wait the full 2 weeks before pressure testing
the tank. Well it seems to be leak free. I've watched the condom go through
all sorts of suggestive movements in and out of the tank for the past 48+
hours, and the opportunities for immature jokes are seemingly endless. I had
a can at the ready to put over the top of it if my neighbor came over. One
thing I can say is that it doesn't leak, so I'll be hangin on to that guy.
Do you think that rubber band I used to hold it on the filler neck is
necessary to get a good seal? Looks kind of painful. OK, sorry.
I do have a more useful contribution. After a few hours of leaning over with
the heavy riveter to get the middle stringers I decided, or I should say my
back decided, to put the wing vertical. I put it in the turning cradle and
clamped that to the table. What a difference! It was fun again after that.
I'm very happy with how the wing came out. It's straight and true according
to my Smart level, and it looks really good.
That one took me about 4 months of hard work and head scratching. Hopefully
the next one will be about half that.
Jesse
