Small plane goes down near Northway Mall

A four-seater airplane on approach to Merrill Field just after 3 p.m. today
crashed in a parking lot near the Northway Mall. The two people onboard were
uninjured.
The Murphy Moose plane, a homebuilt kit aircraft, struck a parked Ford
Bronco outside the Xpress Lube, twisted and spun, smashing its landing gear
and coming to a halt between a light pole and two large containers. "They
were coming down really fast," said Jessica Krieger, who works at Xpress
Lube.
Witnesses said people who saw the crash started running toward the plane to
help when a female passenger and the male pilot quickly jumped out of the
plane and screamed to stay back because of the spewing fuel.
Wade Janssen, who has worked at the Xpress Lube for ten years, said it's not
unusual to see low-flying aircraft near Merrill Field. "The planes fly so
low around here you can see the color of the pilot's eyes," Janssen said.
The pilot, 46-year-old Leslie Gardner, and his passenger were shaken up and
taken to Alaska Regional Hospital to check for injuries. Gardner, reached by
telephone at the hospital, said both he and his passenger were fine.
The Anchorage Police Department, Anchorage Fire Department and Federal
Aviation Administration were at the scene to investigate the cause of the
crash.

Moose accident in Anchorage
I am sitting in my hotel room here in Anchorage about 8 blocks away.
Turned the local news on and just saw the pictures. Glad Les and
passenger are okay, the Moose looks pretty broken up.

Here is a link to the paper article. Sound like the plane did a great job of absorbing the impact. Glad all were OK.
