LSA repositionable gear

Post by Ralph Baker » Sat Feb 18, 2012 10:20 am

Hi Bruce,
My information comes from the Feb '05 EAA Sport Aviation, page 8. That
article states that "repositionable landing gear" is used to explain
"remains fixed in its position from takeoff through landing". That would
require takeoff and landing from the same surface. If there has been a
further change to allow manual operation in flight - great! Of course, I
think the FAA position is dopey but it wouldn't be the first time. EAA has
added some doubletalk about supporting a position allowing LSAs with in
flight gear repositioning as long as it isn't used in flight. Their fall
back is to delete planes with repositionable gear from LSA.

I'm not trying to be argumentative - just don't want anyone to make plans
for an amphib that can't be used as intended. If you have later information
please reply.
Regards,
Ralph

Ralph,

I understood the FAA regulations on gear for an amphib for LSA is they
have
to be hand operated. No electric pumps or motors, I believe this make the
Rebel ok with its hand pump.

Bruce

It sounds like you are correct, Ralph. I just don't remember reading it that
way...probably because it makes so little sense, you would have to assume
they meant repositioning in flight was ok. Go figure?!?

LSA repositionable gear

Sure sounds like an accident about to happen ! Dumb as it is,
this rule would be workable here (IF we had to suffer it !) -
there are a few airports that have land facilities, with a ramp to taxi
down into the water, so you COULD transition this way.

The long flight up there with the gear down would really bug me,
though - and the gear might "slip" up for the trip ! ;-)
