Digest mode is back

Post by Mike Davis » Sat Feb 18, 2012 9:19 am

After a couple of years absence I've put the digest mode of the builders
list back online. Those of you who were around may remember that there was
a problem with the digest getting stuck on one message and just sending that
message out over and over to all the members... We're talking 100's of
thousands of messages over night! After this happened the 3rd time in 6
months I decided to just shut the digest list down. I've been assured that
the bugs have been worked out of the software, and I've been running it with
just myself and one other person subscribed for about 2 weeks now, and it
has worked perfectly so far.

For those of you who might not know what a "digest" list is it's simple...
right now when ever anybody posts a message to the list you get a copy of
it... well in digest you only get one message a day, and all the messages
sent to the list in the preceding 24 hour period are concatenated into this
one message. Both lists distribute exactly the same messages, so you won't
miss anything no matter which method you choose... it's just a matter of
choice.

There's only one difference in using the list... if you're subscribed to the
digest list, the address you send messages to is rebel-builders-d@dcol.com
vice rebel-builders@dcsol.com for the normal list. You can only post
messages to the list you subscribe to... this is how the server verifies
your address... but messages to both addresses wind up in the same archives,
and get sent to members of both lists.

Warning! There have been problems in the past with the digest mode as
mentioned above. Only time will tell if these issues have been resolved
once and for all. Please don't sign up for digest mode and then get mad at
me if you find 1500 messages in your inbox one morning! If you're willing
to take the risk, then go for it... otherwise, wait a few months and see how
things go first.

If you would prefer being on the digest list, then go to:

https://www.dcsol.com/public/code/html-subscribe.htm or
http://www.dcsol.com:81/public/code/html-subscribe.htm

and unsubscribe from the regular list, then subscribe to the digest list.
Remember to reply to the subscription confirmation message the server sends
you... this is required to verify that you entered your e-mail address
correctly, and to keep folks from signing up someone who doesn't want to be
on the list.

There is also the option of the news server. I'm quite often away for
days at a time and by using the news server option I get no rebel
messages in my in box ...only the email that requires a response and a
few spam that sneak through. Then when I'm finished with the mail I can
log onto the news server and get caught up at my leisure. All new Rebel
messages at once with no other junk in between.

Good point Wray... just thought I'd point out that you need to set up your
own account on the archive web site, then tell your news client your server
requires you to logon... then use the username and password you used on the
archive web site. I've done this to keep people from posting spam to the
news server. If I had anonymous access, eventually we'd get flooded with
spam.
