Drew, Ken,

Thanks for the advise. I like the step drill idea, and plug the other end
with a rod, as I have all the tools for that on hand.

I do remember, now that you mention it, reading something about dissolving
steel out of the aluminum. The bit is broken off several inches inside the hole.
No chance of welding it.

To change out steel bearings in the aluminum cases of R/C airplane engines
you put them in the oven at about 350 for 10 minutes... pull them out and
give them a smack on the cutting board and the bearings pop right out. At
room temperature you'd have a hard time driving them out with a hammer.

I doubt your drill bit will drop right out, but once you've drilled to it
from the other side... heating it up a bit might make it much easier to tap
out.

Bruce, I was looking over my EDO 3500's for George Coy and noticed that the
nose wheels are done this way. Just drilled and tapped for a grease fitting
on the one wheel half midway between the retaining bolts and then the entire
wheel is grease filled. Don't see a reason this can't be done on our main
wheels instead of the axle "T" journal....as long as you know it will be a
little more inconvient for greasing than the axle that is always in the
right position. Of course this wheel half zerk fitting can't be done for
those that have "tubed" the axle and aren't filling the entire wheel with
grease. But I caution those that have done this and hope you have drilled at
least three drain holes in the wheel half so water can drain out......that
will still be getting in through the valve stem area/etc. The wheel half
full of water will be a more expensive fix than the rusted bearings ever
were.... once winter freezes that water and cracks your wheels!
