Balancing of Controls

[Al Paxhia]

What I did is balance the elevator on the hinge center line and added about
one pound more lead than they furnished. The total weight added was about
75% (don't recall exact number) of what was required to be in balance.
Did not balance ailerons just installed the furnished weights. Nothing added
to rudder.

The assumption is that the manufacturer has done their homework and drawn
the conclusion that what they have supplied is sufficient weight to insure
no flutter.

The certified world generally does just as you have described and 100%
balances ALL control surfaces (as I did with my alum flaperons - Rebel).

I have always found it strange that MAM put weights in the elevator tips,
but not the rudder tip...considering that in flight they see the exact same
air flow (except for gravity effect on elevator - in level flight) and came
to the conclusion the weights were there more to stop the elevator from
banging down when you let go of the stick than flutter deterrents!

Dave:

The only problem I can see by putting the weight in the leading edge of
the flapperon is the amount of weight required. Wayne has put 8Lbs on
each wing with an 8" arm, with only a couple of inches from the hinge,
weights in the leading edge could get up to 20 or more pounds per wing
and the useable weight goes down.

Wayne I thought with the counter weight on the top and the flap
extended your airspeed would be reduced. Is not the flutter a factor of
speed?

weight on top of the flapperon and not below.
It would not be in the way and I wouldn't walk into it on a walk

Yes, flutter factor is reduced somewhat with speed, but my concern was that
with full flap and aileron down deflection that the C of G of that weight
ends up behind the pivot point, which would (if not for the force of the air
against the flaperon - and the linkage) cause the whole thing to try and go
ass over tea kettle. (ie: it would try to flip over if not for the push pull
rod connection - but could cause jammed controls none the less).
