TS-1 Bolts-REBEL- Proper installation to prevent Rudder Spar

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Sat Feb 18, 2012 12:01 am

Thought while I was going through this 400 Hr AULA and refurbishing it I'd
pass on thoughts as I go along, to help "new builds" last as long as they
can wear wise etc!

Taking this one apart, and I've seen it on many others when removing the
rudder, I found that one of the six retainer bolts for the TS-1's has chewed
a good 1/2 way through the 2" diameter rudder spar tubes wall, for about a
45* area of the tube. This is caused by the end of the bolt touching the
spar tube. Always seems to be one side or the other, even though the bolts
are all the same way, but suspect this is due to slight offsets of the hinge
bracket on the fin spar when you are building.

To stop this from happening to you make sure that you install the bolt HEAD
on the inside of the fin rear spar and put the washers and nuts outboard
against the TS-1's. Installed the other way they may seem to have proper
clearance, but I guess the extra pull on the rudder cable pulls the rudder
pivot point forward enough so it starts to interfere.

Cheers,
Wayne
