Well I finally got my ass in gear and working away on the latest
acquisition.... that I obtained back in June! After popping the
stabs/elevators I have found, once again, another Rebel with the three post
rivets loose (giving half a diameter of movement - side to side) and the
FUS-30 cracked to hell right at the TS-1's. Once I removed the struts from
the Stabs, thus getting rid of the "triangles", I could move the fin post
back and forth a good 2 inches at the top.

Thought this was pretty odd considering this is a very light AULA rebel with
912 and thus has a lot less tail weight than our O-320 Rebels. Has a full
swivel tail wheel, so shouldn't be in this shape with such low hours. Then I
grabbed the tailspring and found what I suspect REALLY helped this ugly blue
bird get into this shape. There is a good 1/4" of slop in the tail spring
retainer blocks. Read the tail spring can slide side to side with a travel
of almost 1/4". This rocking of the tailwheel from side to side of about
3/4" (by the time you get to the end of the wheel) would really add to the
twisting and bending of the tail cone helping it work until the cracks
appear!

Guess what I am trying to get at is when you install your tail spring make
sure there is absolutely ZERO play in your tailspring assembly. It must be
clamped absolutely tight so it can't do any of this side to side movement.
On top of that it is imperative that you do the (non MAM) .032" doubler on
the rear section of the FUS-30 (pics are in the archives under Rebel -
Fuselage) and the Service Bulletin on the FUS-31 to tail post that I
originated many moons ago. Do both of these and the tail section should be
as solid as the day you built it, for a long time to come.

Empty C of G is further back in the AULA's, but considering the 1058lb gross
(realistically possibly flown at 1200 :o) ) the tail spring weight is still
generally less than a 320 powered machine. Not much different but overall
should be less stress back there. All overhauled and doubled now, so should
be good to go once I make up a new tailspring (and finish overhauling the
other 900 things that need correcting!!)

Wouldn't the 912 Rebel have a heavier tail weight than an 0320?
Most 0320's that I know of were always nose heavy.

Since I knew this particular Rebel locally here, I can tell you
that it spent most of its life in very rough ultralight fields,
so it doesn't surprise me.

Most 0320's that I know of were always nose heavy.

Since I knew this particular Rebel locally here, I can tell you
that it spent most of its life in very rough ultralight fields,
so it doesn't surprise me.
