Elite Elevator Travel/Spring Gear Saddle reinforce

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Fri Feb 17, 2012 11:54 pm

We have an Elite Driver in Quebec (that I'll leave anonomous) that called me
the other day and said the Elite was pretty twitchy in pitch... until you
got it leveled off in cruise.

He is considering some adjustments to the spade width while he has it apart
to rebuild the carrythrough structure... after ripping his gear legs out at
VERY slow speed (so he says) in a corn field!

ANYONE building an Elite or Rebel with Spring Leaf gear, make sure you so
something to reinforce those hollow tubes that the saddle bolts go through
now!, while it's still easy. Flying, I'd be temped to $@&) up the paint job
and pull the lower corner wrap and side panel under the door sill to access
the tubes to do same!

Subject: Elite Elevator Travel

Someone recently was asking how much up and down
elevator for the Elite. I was just looking at one today
in the final stages of building, and took the
opportunity to measure the elevator travel.

Up elevator was about 22 degrees and down was about 18
degrees. This particular one has the stock tips and
span, no mods.

Just to be clear, though, this one is not yet flying.

Elite Elevator Travel/Spring Gear Saddle reinforce

There is a MAM service bulletin that calls for a 1/4" x 2" x 2" x 6" angle
that gets riveted to the top of the carry thru tube on each side of the fuselage
where the gear bolts come thru.

This bulletin is on their web sight with pictures and is now included on all
new kits ordered with spring gear. It is fairly easy to fit after the fact
without tearing the fuselage apart. I know because I did it.

If you are flying spring gear and haven't done this, I would apply this
factory fix right away.
