PSRU decisions

Post by Ralph Baker » Fri Feb 17, 2012 11:12 pm

Mike, If it were my choice I would separate the engine and gearbox oil
suppies. One reason already mentioned is possible cross contamination
(Rotax 912's have this problem with leaded fuel). Another reason is
that gear oils (normally GL-5 rated today) are designed for gears with
their shearing stresses on the oil while engine oils are designed for
acid control, anti foaming, low drag, and so on. The engine oils today
also do not have the "last ditch lubricant" phosphorus and calcium
additives they had some years back. I would ask the PSRU mfg for an
opinion.

As for venturis, the size are a guide to how many vacuum devices they
can run, not the inches of water they produce. The main drawback to
venturis is that they don't produce any vacuum until the air starts
flowing and that precludes any IFR applications. I suspect that a
vacuum limiter would be required with a venturi but I'm sure there are
more knowlegeable "vacuum heads" than I who can give you a more
comprehensive answer.
