I am just finishing up my elevator trim tab and wanted to give a heads up to
prevent unsightly trim tab skew - after installing the hinge on the elevator
and on the upper trim tab/trim spar the directions say:
3.5 Step 15 - "Drill Holes approximately 1 1/4" Spacing" - (I would
recommend using the trim hinge that was drilled in the previous step as a
template)
3.5 Step 23 - "Trim the skin along the line" - This refers to the bottom of
the trim tab and I believe that it is important to cleco the hinge onto the
elevator/upper trim tab and clamp the outer trailing edges of the trim tab
to the trailing edge of the elevator (with the elevator upside down) mark
where you want to trim the bottom of the trim tab at this point. It also
allows you to chose the thickness of the trim tab to better match the
elevator.
I tried following the directions - Step 21 "Measure from the trailing edge
to make sure that the line is square" but it left it skewed - I was lucky I
had not drilled as per the instructions yet.
The instructions then seem to infer that you can take out any skew with the
trim tab ribs.
Does anyone have any thoughts on Gap Seals as they relate to the (rather
large)trim tab, flaps and ailerons? Is there anything that it would be
smart to do ahead of time like flush rivet the lower surface gap areas??
