Posted 5 pictures to Float Installations.
Was finishing up the final items on the MAM 1500 floats that I stretched to
1800's, being a new tire on one (thanks to someone landing with their feet
on the brakes - with brand new tires F##$&@#!), new brake pads and the
desire to add one more pair of Belleville washers to the shock struts (don't
ask ;o), I do them different!)!
While fiddling with trying to access the two forward torque plate bolts nuts
I thought there has to be a better way. Not so bad just letting the nuts and
spacer washers drop on the disassembly, but sure a pain in the butt trying
to get the washers and nuts back in place when going back together. Very
easy solution was to slot the torque plate holes for the forward two bolts.
This allows you to preinstall the bolts, spacer washers, washer for under
the nut and the nut (to the trailing arm of the landing gear). Then you can
put the entire wheel/axle/torque plate assembly up in place and just slip
the slots onto the forward torque plate bolts. Tighten up the axle cap bolts
and then tighten up the torque plate bolts.
I also spent over an hour trying to get the bolts out that hold the upper
end of the shock strut. The one side has to be oriented with the head out so
it clears the brake line, etc, so I tried using a ball peen hammer to make a
deep enough dent in the wheel well sides to allow it to move out far enough
to release the struts to no avail. I got the 90* angle drill out with a
Unibit and drilled holes approximately 11/16 at about mid travel for the
retract system. It was then very easy to pull the bolts back enough to get
the strut off. Make sure you lock some vise grips on the bolt so you don't
lose it into the side compartment and have to go fishing with a magnet ;o(.
After everything was reassembled I used 3 layers of high quality "tin" tape
to cover the holes. If the tin tape doesn't hold after a few water
excursions I will find some proper snap in plugs or similar to fill the
holes, until they are needed the next time!
Cheers,
Wayne
