Hi Folks,
Just went down to the Aero Club bar for a quick one and the right chap was
there, he has used the jabaru engine and has researched them pretty well.
Apparently the earlier ones had no valve lubrication of any significance,
it didn't do them any good! Once they got that solved it was the end of the
problem, they are a very good motor.
They have changed the cylinders now so that the 4 cylinder is producing 80
hp (optional I think), up from the previous 60hp. It weighs 50lb less than
the 912 and costs a bundle of dollars less too (NZ$7000).
What may also be of interest is the new 6 cylinder version produces 120hp.
weighs the same as the 912 and is about the same price, not bad,I would
have thought.
I was warned to beware when comparing the specs of both engines to make
sure the weight of the Rotax includes radiator, coolant, reduction box etc.
Hope this helps.

Jabiru is a very nice and quite complete package. Downside of Jabiru is that
the
rated power is at a high rpm. Something like 3400rpm I think. Not bad for
fast
cruise but the slower geared prop would be better for takeoff.

Thanks for the info, Alister !
Glad to hear Jabiru has solved their problems. If the 6 cylinder
is anywhere near as smooth as our old Continental C-145 was in our
Aeronca Sedan, it should be a real joy to fly behind !!
FWIW - I think 80 hp is about as low as anyone would want to go
for the Rebel, although I have heard of ONE in Czechoslovakia that is
(was ?) flying with a Rotax 532, of 53 hp. !! It apparently flew once
with THREE people aboard !!!
