Flapless Rebel

Post by Dennis Schwettmann » Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:49 pm

Thanks Drew. I aquired a couple of 290d2's for a song last year . The one that is installed in my project only has 427 hrss on it. In the deal I got a couple of new props and am going with a wooden Sensenich. I am wondering If anyone has built a Rebel without flaps? I live 52 feet below sea level and just kick around here in the desert (SO. Cal). My old PA-18 did'nt have flaps and I acould put it down just about anywhere. Would a flapless Rebel be practical? My serial no. is 020!
Dennis

Flapless Rebel

That would only poise one question from me Dennis! WHY!

You have to build the flaperons anyway as they form the trailing edge of the
wing profile and you have to at least use the outboard ones as ailerons. If
you already have to build them, then why wouldn't you use them?? You have to
assemble the control system anyhow to control the ailerons and if you went
flapless you would still have to make a mounting plate for the bellcrank
assembly to run the ailerons. IF this is the case it won't take any longer
to make the proper mixer arm assembly so you can drop the flaperons down
(and they do make a big difference in landing/take off distances). Therefore
the only extra time would be the cable attachment and flap handle or
equivalent item to operate the mixer arm.

As for having serial #020 I hope you are up on all the upgrades and
suggested mods from that vintage of kit to date. The biggest concern to me
is the first run of kits had .025 or .020 tail wraps (Fus-30's). Everything
afterwards has .032 FUS-30's and you also need to do a doubling .032 as you
can find in the picture archives of the area from about 2" in front of the
tailspring attach bolt to the rear fin spar. Also my doubler of the FUS-31
to rear fin spar Service bulletin and upsized rivets to replace the 3 x
RV1410's to RV1613's. Suggest doubling and staggering the rivet pitch up the
front door post and increasing the top 4 or 5 that are too close together to
be doubled to RV1613's (or do MAM's float fix bulletin) Landing gear has
been upgraded a few times since serial #020, as have the lower carrythough
to firewall corner wraps. The originals were all .020 FUS-10's. More recent
kits have .025 FUS-70's (that are also nice on the corner wraps at the top
cabin to cone junction. The newest kits are being supplied with .032 corner
wraps for the front lowers, but I think this was just to cut down on parts
as this is what the Elite is supplied with. Firewall needs reinforcing at
the top motor mounts or it will compress inwards as the top mounts pull toge
ther in a hard landing as the engine continues in a downward path after the
airframe has bottomed out!

I could go on all night! Just thought I'd give a heads up if you haven't
"cruised" the archives on suggested upgrades and modifications.... .032 door
sills, instrument panel deck FUS-8? corner gussets, etc

Don't want to scare you off, I just want to let you know that it's easier to
upgrade now than after one of these areas has failed or deformed and ruined
your day!

Cheers,
Wayne G. O'Shea

Flapless Rebel

Geeez, Dennis !! It'd probably be MORE work to build it
<without> the flapperons !!! You might as well just do it - they
will improve your takeoff & landing performance, and your roll rate !

You don't HAVE to use them if you don't want to ! :-)

.....bobp

Good thing you got TWO O-290's - when the first blows up,
you'll have a spare ! ;-^) They're cheap for a reason !!

(there- now I've pissed off all the O-290 drivers .... ) :-(
