VW Diesel TDI

Post by Reed, Britt/FSC Salt Lake » Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:49 pm

I recently purchased a VW Golf TDI and am largly impressed with the engine.
The 1.9 liter engine is rated 90 HP in the US and 115 HP in Europe. I am
told that the difference is it is derated in the US for more conservative
emissions. I don't know how to determine the engine weight but it is 70 lbs
more than the "Gasoline" 2.2 liter. The engine develops full torque at 3800
rpm and is supposed to last significantly longer than the gasoline engines
and significantly more fuel efficient. The TDI stands for Turbo Direct
Injection and it comes integral with the intercooler.

Also of interest is the V6 which will be rated at 150 HP and of the most
interest to me (to apply to a 3500) is the V10 318 HP TDI - I e-mailed VW to
get the weight but they wouldn't share it with me since it is not available
in the US. It is the engine for the new Tourreg - a SUV that is already
released in Europe and should be brought into the US shortly - VW projects
30,000 of the toureg in the US the first year.

VW Diesel TDI

Post by Drew Dalgleish » Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:49 pm

I believe that is a continuation of the 1.8l rabbit engine and the same
engine I had in my 85 jetta. It's a good strong engine but it has a cast
iron block and head making it very heavy. If the V6 is a new engine with an
aluminum block it would be very interesting to look at. I'd love to go on a
road trip of european junk yards with a set of scales and spec sheets just
to see what exists and if any of it is practical.
