Rebel vs Maverick

Hi Bradley !

No need to worry about making changes to the wing structure -
the Murphy factory have done all the necessary changes, and done
stress analysis and actual testing to assure the structure....
both are safe, rugged aircraft.

Your only question is - What kind of flying do you want
to do ???

The Maverick is a delightful aircraft with surprising
performance that was designed as a Canadian and Japanese Ultralight
(under 400 lb !!). It is smaller than the Rebel - about the same
width inside as a Cessna 152 - and designed for smaller engines.
It will perform really well with 2 people aboard with only the
Rotax 503 - unfortunately, a 2-stroke, but you can go as large
as the HKS 60 hp. 4-stroke, which was designed specifically FOR
the Maverick - a great combination ! That is the engine size
limit for the Maverick, so it's really just a fun, fair-weather
flyer, but a great one !! With the long wing option, it could
double as a motorglider !! ;-)

For a few dollars more, you can build a Rebel, and have
a much wider choice of engines, up to 4 seats, and/or a flying camper,
with room for 2 to sleep in the back. The Rebel can handle lots
of weather and wind, and is ok being tied outside. The Rebel
is 4" wider inside than a Cessna 180 (!!) so there's LOTS of
room ! If you're looking for affordable flying with good performance,
you can use the 80 hp. Rotax 912 4-stroke, and burn 3 gallons/hr. at 97 mph !
Or you can use a Lycoming O-320 of 150 hp., and add the Murphy 1800
amphib floats, and have "The best float plane in the world"(tm) !!

Thanks Bob,

Its just that I have seen a couple of web sites detailing the Rebel
Contruction projects, and I just wanted to compare how they were built in
the pics. But I could not find any Maverick construction projects pages on
the web. Does Murphy air talk about that kind of stuff in the info packs?

Hi Bradley !

Checked the info pack - there's some general information on
construction, but no details of the wings. They have no stringers,
since the covering from the spar back is fabric. I seem to recall
compression struts, but I've been wrong before !! ;-)

The wing struts are lighter than the Rebel, too, but the
wing structure was tested to over +5/-3 G's, so it's plenty strong
enough. A modified version of the Maverick wing is used on the
new JDM-8 ultralight, as well.

Sorry I can't help more - there's over 100 Rebels in Ontario
now, but only 3 Mavericks, and none close enough to check out !
There ARE over 100 of them in Japan, though !! ;-^) :-)

Guess it's really still a question of what kind of flying
you want to do. Are you looking at an ultralight kind of airplane,
and what kind of engine do you prefer ? Are you OK with 2-strokes ??
One factor might be - are you in Canada ?? Otherwise, the Maverick
must be classed as an Experimental, with all the hassles that go
with that....
