Test flight ballast - Rebel

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:46 pm

Murray, you're right on putting something in the back until you get used to
it for 3 pointing. I always put some weight in the back of a Rebel for the
first test flights. One: to trade off that I never carry full fuel on same
and second: to be safe that I wasn't off on the W & B calcs.

Instead of just using a "sack" full of misc may I suggest a 5 gallon jug
full of clean drinking water, lashed down in the cargo area. At least it has
a great usage, if the unmentionable happens in a non-habitable area. Or you
could trade off and put 30 lbs of survival gear/tools in a sack and a 2
gallon (20lb) water jug. I just find that short of using lead, that water is
an easier ballast to work with and secure in place. If going with the 5
gallon jug those blue camping ones work great and have a sturdy handle to
put the tie down straps through.

Cheers,
Wayne

Thanks Walter:

I'm pondering. With the weight in the front allows more baggage in the
rear.
But how much lbs. does a guy think he's going to carry around all the
time.I
have been told to put at least a 50 lb. sack in the back while on a
learning
curve.( not sure how long this curve lasts, I've been told that it goes on
for awhile)

Sounds like we'll have twin planes. Is yours 150 or 160hp.

Thanks again

Murray Cherkas
