Roof Mounted Flap System

Post by Mike Kimball » Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:45 pm

My building buddy and I mounted his wings and hung the flaps and ailerons on
his Moose recently and were able to do the final hook-up and testing of the
roof mounted flap system we are both using and it works great! Aileron droop
is via a MAC servo and is completely separate from flap deployment. The
pilot gets to decide what combination of aileron droop and flap deployment
is used. In case anyone is interested, there's about $550 in materials to do
this, and a fair amount of work involved. I spent about 20 hours of work to
put the system together. But I had the advantage of using Rob's as a guide
to creating mine. He took a lot more time putting his together since he was
first. I just copied his when the bugs were worked out. The system really
only has one disadvantage that I can see. The flap lever intrudes into the
cabin with full flaps. But it faces forward and I don't really see it as a
big hazard in a crash. You can't impale yourself on it. But you could bounce
off the side of the handle a bit. Besides opening up the floor between the
seats and providing a good spot for the amphib float/hydraulic wheel ski
pump the other advantage is that there's no long cable run and nothing pokes
up through the roof. I believe the system also provides the same mechanical
advantage as the floor mounted system. It shouldn't be any harder to pull.
This system provides 39 deg of flaps and two levels of reflex, 2 deg, and 5
deg. If anyone is interested I can probably put together enough drawings
and a materials list to duplicate it.

Mike I would be very interested in getting whatever info you have
available or can put together regarding the roof mounted flap system as I
will be doing this with my Moose

Roof Mounted Flap System

Post by Mike Kimball » Sat Feb 18, 2012 10:13 am

I got a request for pics of my roof mounted flap system recently. I
uploaded some pics to the S/M Flap section. I have a drawing with
dimensions and stuff somewhere that I'll also try to dig out, scan, and
upload.
