Elite/Rebel torque tube horn to aileron push pull length

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:43 pm

Al, I dug out my push pull simulator today and it appears that I have been
using a finished length of 6 1/8". I think there is some room to make it
longer, but I have never been able to make 7 5/8" work on the Rebel's
flaperons and I don't figure the Elite is any different. Try to get it as
long as you can towards the 7 5/8", for lighter stick forces, but the
dimension is not critical as long as you get both sides identical and the
horns orientation the same on both wings as well. Also ignore the lower wing
skin slot that you have to work with. You should be setting this up with the
lower wing skin off, if you can, and them make the slot length as required
after determining the throw distance. You HAVE to make a doubler around
this slot anyhow and if need be put it on the outside to correct any excess
slot you have in either direction.

Cheers,
Wayne

Alan, open up the tank lid hole and mount the flange to the inside of the
tank. A much cleaner looking installation!! Stick with the "necked"
fillers
as it gives you something to hold onto as you climb the ladder, tire or
fueling steps on floats to check your fuel level or when actually
refueling.
As for the torque tube travel and the spec'd dimension of the pushpull
tube,
I have never been able to make that long of a tube work. I think I use 6
5/8
but will have to check my template tomorrow and let you know for sure. You
can also take a piece of 1/2" plywood about 1" wide x 8"long and drill
holes
in it at 3/8" intervals and play with it until you find a length between 7
5/8 and 6 that works the best for you.

Cheers,
Wayne

Subject: A couple of Elite questions

I have recently started building an Elite, and have run into a couple of
areas where the instructions don't seem very helpful (well, more than a
couple, but I've gotten answers for the others).

1) The instructions tell you to put the fuel filler on the inside of the
top skin. The 2 1/4" hole isn't big enough to accommodate the filler.
Presumably they mean the outside? And in the venting instuctions, I see
a reference to flush filler caps. Are these available?

2) When trying to rig the aileron torque tube, I seem to have about 5
deg. too much up, and too little down, using the specified pushrod
length of 7 5/8". I don't actually have the aileron finished, but have
jury rigged the horn on a hinge bracket. Even with the adjustment all
the way in the short direction (which shortens it by about 1/8"), I
still don't get the specified travel. I also notice that the horn comes
up against the forward end of the slot in the lower skin, but comes
nowhere near the rear end of said slot.

Any ideas?
