Timer for Radial
The timing device you describe is the Russian version of the old TIME RIGHT
gage we used to use on U.S. Engines. They are useful in finding TDC, but not
so useful for finding the timing point. The crankshaft flanges are marked in
two places with degrees of crankshaft rotation (not prop flange rotation). I
sometimes use this device to determine T.D.C. then by taping a piece of bent
safety wire to the engine at the zero mark use the graduations on the prop
flange.
If you use the device, be cautious as if you move the prop too quickly you
damage the device or the piston. I usually use a thin screw driver or
something like that through the spark plug hole to determine T.D.C. as it is
easier than using the Russian device.
The timing device is part number 10-24-72R. It is part of the tool kits
that we supply. The attached is a description and picture of the tool kit.
