Just where did you have the restriction, and how did you find it?
Also how did you fix it?

If your oil is too hot it can be either not enough air or not enough
oil flow.

I have an O-320 Lycosaurus, with a pressure/temp bypass valve, which is
used to contro the flow for an external filter if installed. As I
understand it, it is to prevent loss of flow if there is a restriction
due to the filter plugging. I have the external oil cooler in series
with the filter. This valve was full of gunk, so the valve didn't
always open fully when the temp rose. Sometimes it would and sometimes
not!! Hard to find an intermittent fault. I found it when I took it off
and set it in a pot of water on the stove and watched it's action as the
water reached the boiling point. VOILA!!! Problem identified, and
cleaning it out solved the problem. Seems when I had the engine
'ZEROED' normally this valve is replaced due to worn seats, but this one
had perfect seats so it was cleaned and replaced. But the cleaning
didn't get to the gunk UNDER the temp sensing bulb.

Working fine now, just enjoying flying. Getting to feel like I trust my
machine, which is good.

Just got back from buzzing my buddy's place where there is a party for
his 60th and my 70th. Getting old but not stopping!!!

G'day Phil

Thanks for your response.

My rebel is powered with a Rotax 912s (100 hp) ( I have modern technology,
not ancient as in the Lycosaurus!)

My oil filter set up is different to the one that you have, but I was
interested in your remarks.

I have tried all the fixes suggested by listers and have had no great
success. However as the engine gets more
use the temps are reducing.

What I have found, is that the oil filter size used on other Rotax 100hp
engines is larger than the one that I have.
When I ordered the kit from the factory the 100 hp engine was just only
released and perhaps the cooler supplied is satisfactory for the 80hp and
not the larger one.

Maybe a larger cooler will do the job! But that's something for another day.

Happy Birthday to you and your friend. I am just a little younger, and I am
not at all sure that I will be able to fly at 70, or even 60 for that
matter!
