broken tank rivets

Post by Drew Dalgleish » Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:13 pm

There was a thread asking about tank rivets a while ago. I was reminded
about it today when I riveted all the bulkheads and chines on my second
float. I only broke about a dozen rivets today. I remove the broken ones by
pulling them out with my hand rivet puller with the nose peice removed then
cut off the rivet and replace the nose peice so the mandrel will release
from the jaws.To avoid breaking rivets make sure the puller is square and
tight before pulling, make sure the rivet is the right grip lenghth. If
it's too short it's more likely to break. And use the least amount of air
pressure that will do the job. 40lbs is about right for my riveter.
