wing attachments that seem to be applicable to all SR 3500s, both fast build

SR 3500 Service Bulletin---High Urgency
SR 3500 Service Bulletin---High Urgency
Took some work, but was able to save prior to downloading from MAM site and
then opened in Adobe. File appears to be corrupted, but may be my computer
(but would be funny as ALL the other MAM files download okay!)
This is the overall wing fitting to wing fitting distance that I was talking
about/posted a month or so ago, that Brian had warned me about, that the
forward steel bushing may need machining down. It appears that this isn't
enough room and now the FUS-701 on the forward inner wall of the
carrythrough tube has to be moved to the front outside face against the
Fus-306 gusset, to give some more room. Remember that the rear attach
fitting on the wing must FLOAT between the fuselage pickups on the 3500, it
is not to be held tightly as was the case with the 2500 and all other
Rebels! If you have your wings done measure, as I posted previously, before
you drill off the 701 and move it. Chances are though if Brian has posted
this that it most likely has to be done no matter what or he would have
offered the option!!!!

SR 3500 Service Bulletin---High Urgency
I have done a few of the 3500 mods and not others. Mainly, I did the front
spar attach mod on the fuselage but not the rear. I did no mods to the
wings. Basically, I didn't want to undo anything already finished at this
time, but I wanted to complete areas I hadn't started on and maybe upgrade
later. Also, this would give me greater strength up front for the Chevy V8
I still plan to use. Primarily by adding the V-brace. My rear attach will
not "float" but will be held tightly. The front will also be held tightly
due to the spacers that are called for in a Service Bulletin for the SR2500.
In other words, an unmodified SR2500 conforming to the MAM Service Bulletin
is not supposed to "float" at either the front or the rear. Since I didn't
upgrade the attach points on the wing, I'm assuming I should be fine for fit
with the fuselage attach point.
I spoke to an engine builder that seems quite knowledgeable and experienced
(with cars) in Fairbanks today. He says that he can build a Chevy V8 400 or
427 small block (aluminum) that will not weigh significantly more than an
aluminum 350 and should produce upwards of 500 HP. Call me skeptical, or at
least worried about reliability, but assuming he is right, I assume I should
be worried about the strength in my tailfeathers and Vne. I wonder if the
effect on the tailfeathers is more closely tied to horsepower or is it more
closely tied to the big, fat prop that normally comes with the M14? I want
to use a Hartzell 3-bladed prop. There are a lot of applications up to
350HP but not so many above that. I wonder if I'll have a hard time finding
a prop if I exceed 350HP? The PSRU could be a problem too. Many PSRUs on
the market aren't rated for that kind of horsepower.
You think I'm a few cards short of a full deck? My fellow SR builder here
in Fairbanks has joined me in wanting a V8. Why? Because he still fully
intends to put a turbine in his in about two years. Except for bays with
stuff in them (aileron push tube, lift strut attach) his whole wing is wet.
Full 3500 upgrade. Excellent workmanship. He needs a temporary engine for
two years. He wants a Chevy V8 so that when he is ready to put the turbine
in he can drop the V8 in his Corvette! Must be the cold weather. It's
addled our brains. Call us crazy, but if it works, you can't help but drool
over the sound of a V8 and 500 HP dragging the amphibs out of the tiny lake
where you just spent the weekend.

joined us, but apparently the cold hasn't affected him yet since he is still
dead set on the sensible Suburu. Soon as there's open water available
somewhere I'll push him in and he'll surely start planning JATO pods on his
V8 powered Super Rebel.
