Cleco price alert

Missed the air tool question! Have never used one, so don't know. When you
start out with the hand pliers make sure you switch hands every 10 clecos or
so, so your muscles grow/ache evenly on each arm!!!!

Avery Tools is running a special on Clecos 4 std sizes for
$.32 USD each down from $.38 USD each.

Is this a fair/good/excellent price? Is their quality OK?
Is there a better quality/price source for Clecos?
What air Cleco installation tool do people prefer?

Rick DeCiero

Cleco price alert

Post by Rick DeCiero » Fri Feb 17, 2012 9:47 pm

Rob,
There is a definite difference in the quality from one cleco vendor to
another. Unknowingly, I had purchased about 100 pieces of poor quality. They
are # 30's. I can not remember where I got them but it was at one of the
standard vendors at Oshkosh. The clecos were new. The thing to look for here is
that the nose of the side pieces are well rounded and tapered in to the center.
Also, make sure that when squeezed, the two side pieces fully collapse to meet.
I now buy these only through the mail and if the parts are not up to my
requirements, they go back. Price is not necessarily the driver for the quality
of these pieces as I have purchased some excellent new clecos for 25 cents
apiece. This was about 6 years ago. I have the air cleco tool from Aircraft
spruce. It was about $75 at the time. This is one tool that you must have
unless you have Popeye forearms.
Good luck you'll need it,
Rick D. (getting closer)

klehman

Cleco price alert

Post by klehman » Fri Feb 17, 2012 9:47 pm

Hi Rob

I got all mine from http://www.aircraft-tool.com/index.html-ssi
Aircraft Tool is usually the cheapest price except they are even cheaper
at Oshkosh or Sun n Fun. They work fine but I have nothing to really
compare them to. I suspect I accumulated about 500 #30 and 400 #40 by
the time I finished the wings. Guys have said I'll use them all again on
the floats. Recommend you get about 10 of the #11 size as well.

Avery also sells a flanging tool that looks like about a 3" round by
half inch thick piece of aluminum with the nylon rollers. You can make
your own but the Avery one is my favourite for putting a small bend or
flange along the edge of the aluminum panels. Not a requirement but it
does keep the edges tight and looks better.

The pneumatic tool sounds silly until you can't sleep due to numb hands
from squeezing clecos by the 100s. I have the one from Spruce but I have
seen it cheaper (US industrial maybe?). Anyway there is a small disk
with an orifice under the hose fitting where it threads into the body of
the tool. I replaced that disk with a smaller orifice so that the tool
hammers less hard when removing an installed cleco. Less air pressure
doesn't help as then it won't squeeze the cleco fully.

Cleco price alert

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Fri Feb 17, 2012 9:47 pm

That's about as good as it gets Rob, but I did recently come across someone
that was claiming $.29 each and will try to figure out who that was again
and post. I am currently working on a deal to buy direct from California
Associated Products (Cleko-Lok brand) in volume. Don't know what the costs
will be and definitely don't wait for me to consummate a deal, as I don't
know if it will ever come for sure!

If you want to get some long grip fasteners, and a few of each side is
always nice/handy (these are the ones with either nuts or wing nuts on them
and grip in usually 1/2" or 1" ranges), go on e-bay and buy them from a guy
by the name of Ray Lawrence his e-bay name is rl100w@aol.com. I just bought
a dozen 3/16 ones for only $10.50US and a dozen 1/8 for only $8.50. These
usually sell for about $4 a piece and it would have been great to have about
60 to 100 (in 3/32, 1/8 and 3/16) of them when doing the SR wings with all
those damn shims under every rib. With the Rebel you will find only a few
places where you need the extra grip that standard cleco's don't offer! Up
until my recent purchase, above, I was making do with 2 x 1/8" ones and 2 x
3/16" ones but it sure would have been nice to have a dozen of each around
before!

Regards,
Wayne G. O'Shea

Wayne,
I just checked a few and the CLEKOLOK-USA name is stamped on the side of the
poor quality pieces that I have. Maybe this was a bad batch but it doesn't sound
like it. I looked at some stubby ones that don't work too well and the
CLEKOLOK-USA name appears again. I have relegated these to automotive sheet
metal duty as they are terrible to work with not to mention what they do to an
aluminum hole after a few in and outs. I'll probably sell them at an automotive
flea market. Some auto "discounters" sell clecos for $ 1.00 - $1.25 each !!! And
you thought the aviation people were getting hosed?
Most of my clecos are KWIK-LOC USA and they are very nice.
Good luck,
Rick D.

Cleco price alert

Post by RJ Thomas » Fri Feb 17, 2012 9:47 pm

Rob,

I bought all of my clecos from Avery and I have had no significant problems
with them. I have managed to break a few, but I think that has more to do
with heavy handed technique than the quality of the products.

Cheers, rj

Avery is selling U.S. made Monogram clecos. Any builder experience with
Monogram clecos.
