Rebel FUS bulkhead question

Post by Terry Dazey » Fri Feb 17, 2012 9:37 pm

Hello Rebelheads:

I am in the process of laying out the 9 hole pattern at the fuselage
bulkhead overlaps (3 columns with 3 rivets each). On a couple of the
bulkhead overlaps, the vertical rivet line on both outside columns comes
very close to the factory tooling holes.

Is it best practice to locate these holes inboard of the tooling holes
(this would leave me with a non symmetrical pattern), or is it
acceptable to leave these areas undrilled and unriveted utilizing only 7
rivets attaching the overlaps (2 on each outside column and 3 in the
middle) instead of the suggested 9?

Thanks for the information.

Rebel FUS bulkhead question

I put 9 holes in and just dodged the tooling holes wherever it seemed best.
My rivet lines, because of this, are not symmetrical, nor do I think this is
critical to anything but aesthetics. Just using 7 rivets would probably be
OK too.

Rebel FUS bulkhead question

Hello Terry
I don't think it's that important to have a symetrical pattern just
maintain proper edge clearences and use the nine rivets called for. If
you're going to instal the rear floor you could omit the centre row of
rivets on the bottom flange until then otherwise you'll be drilling out
that row so you can instal the little aluminum angles that attach the st40?
floor rails.

I also kept to the number of rivets specified and didn't worry about
irregular spacing as long as it met the minimum spacing requirements. In
a few places where the tooling hole was 3/16", I simply put a 3/16"
rivet in the tooling hole.

Even though I've never seen it written anywhere, I think it is probably
OK to use the minimum edge distance of 2d spacing from an unused hole.

Hey Guys,
Thanks for the confirmation on the bulkhead rivet holes. I am adding the
rivets for a total of 9 on each overlap, side stepping the factory holes
(with exception of the pulley bracket where there is more).
Thanks again.
