Batteries and fairings

Post by Jennifer Grant » Fri Feb 17, 2012 8:56 pm

Hi All
I have been reading the latest discussion on batteries and thought I would
jump in with what we are using. Our battery is in the tail in an aviation
grade vented fiberglass container. It is grounded to the fus and one long
cable to the engine. From the bulk head at the battery location forward our
floor is insulated and carpeted for our sleeping comfort.I just replaced
our battery this year for the first time in 140hrs,it is a Power-surge
(lawn-mower type)1200-225CCA-cost including tax was $29 CDN.I've had no
complaints with this installation. The only caution is that if your battery
does die the 3 blade Warp is a nasty piece of work to try and hand-start
and yes it is positioned on the crankshaft to facilitate hand proping.
To do an annual inspection the shop I work in uses a genaric type form
,3pgs, that we go through with all airplanes, weather a 150,Twin Commander
or Drommader and do each item that applies.I could copy and e-mail this if
anyone is interested.
I am going to try to fair my lower fire-wall as has been explained and see
if I can bring down my temps for float ops.I'm sure my 0-290 will get
warm.Last year I installed a surplus 172 oil cooler on the lower,left
fire-wall,as per Wayne O's pics and advice and it helped a lot.I am using
an ADC remote mounted oil filter on the right side and can still duct
air-flow on to it if needed.
Our floats are almost ready to install. Its not like they needed much anyway
since Carm used them last year but I have done a bit of maintainance to
them ,replace some bearings etc. and just need to drill the sister keels
for suction relief and shorten the vertical struts.
All of my interior amphib installation mods are done except I have to
finish machining the ends for the 4130 brace I am putting between my top
engine mounts under the dash. Then when I change my windshield I will
pick-up on this with diagonal braces to the forward wing attachments. All
of this airplane stuff has had to be put on hold until my lovely wife is
satisfyed that I have put enough effort into her house renovation
plans, then if I've been good I can play with the Rebel.
Also,my doors get sucked out at the upper-front corners and I have not come
up with a fix yet.
Best regards to all, Angus McKenzie
