Floatplane Fishing Trip

Hello Everyone!

Just thought I would give a "heads up" to any of you that were considering
the idea that I had back in the fall, about a float flying fishing trip to
the Hearst, Ontario area this summer. It looks like I am out of luck to
participate in what <I> proposed, unless someone else has a spare seat
(although I hate being a passenger!). I have VERY reluctantly sold our
freshly refurbished/refined and modified Amphib Rebel, but at <just> shy of
6 figures I couldn't really justify keeping it! (to myself guys, not my
wife!)

While I'm on aircraft sales, I know there was at least one individual out
there that was interested in the O-235-L2C 118H.P. Rebel on wheels that I
was refurbishing. Sorry, but it has also been sold and will have a new home
on the island of MAUI, HAWAII of all places!!! No I'm not flying it there,
it is going into a marine container for a ship voyage. Still working on a
paid trip to reassemble it on site!!!

Gee, Wayne, they wouldn't need someone to fly it out to the
Wet Coast to put into that container, would they ??!! ;-)
(Would I ? Would I !!)

Just back from flying the SR-3500 out to B.C. - a quick but
enjoyable trip. First time I've seen Lake Louise frozen solid !

Boy, does that thing CLIMB !! Thought I'd bent the VSI needle !

Sorry Bob! It's getting containerized in my yard, so it can be done right (I
hope)! Plan is to get it up off the tires, brace the engine etc., so it
doesn't get damaged bouncing up and down on the tires/gear (like you see
happen to so many homebuilts at Osh that have been trailered there!). This
will allow the airframe to become part of the container instead of
<following> it's every move. I have heard horror stories about containerized
helicopters being shipped in high seas to New Zealand from Canada. Only 2
out of 5 were serviceable at journeys end. The light containers (read
aircraft), of course, get put on top of the load and if you have ever seen
how high they load the container ships you know that a 3 foot rock in a wave
at deck level is about a 25 foot swing for the top container!!!!!

Wayne,

Sometime you say things that are incredible insightful. I have to just wonder
how these things pop into your head. I personally would have thought it made
perfect sense to put the fragile containers on the top of the load and not
given it another thought. Do you have to think about this stuff or does it
just pop into your head?

the Super-3500 this summer at AirVenture. I don't suppose you would let me

Hi Wayne !

There's been a LOT of discussion about proper packing lately,
after the annual pilgrimage to Sun 'n Fun ! Two of the factory
aircraft were damaged on the truck because of incorrect packing ..

The biggest mistake is to put a strap over the aircraft to tie
it down securely - it still bounces ! The next biggest is to fail to
support the pieces properly by spreading the load as much as possible -
use wide, flat supports, with lots of foam covering, not sharp-edged
forms that don't fit the shape they are supporting. One of the best
methods was to just strap down the tires securely (and the tailwheel),
and let the suspension do its job ! -------- (for short trips)
And never put anything INSIDE other parts that isn't SECURELY fastened
so it can't move. You would be amazed at what a thousand (or 2) miles of
washboard road can break and shake loose !!

You're right - if it's off the gear, and all the heavy parts
are well supported by sturdy blocks, and well cushioned, it should
have a better chance of surviving.

I'm sure you know all that, from your previous trailer
recoveries, but it might help somebody out there - if in doubt,
ASK ! There are MANY people out there who have suffered transport
damage, so take advantage of their experiences !!

When we trailer our Kitfox we just secure the main gear to the trailer bed
but the tail is supported with a brace so the weight is no resting on the
tail spring. This is because the wings fold back and there is more weight
over the tail wheel than it is designed to carry which may not be the case
with the Rebel.

The biggest problem with trailer damage to a Kitfox has been from stiff
springs on the trailer. Planes are very light and most trailer springs are to
stiff and shake the aircraft to pieces. Very light/soft springs are the key.
And secure every thing down well. Let the air out of the tires then inflate
them after you have straps the axles to the bed.
