trim tab hinge pin

Post by Jason Beall » Fri Feb 17, 2012 8:55 pm

Hi all,

Should I bend the end of the hinge pin for the trim
tab? The instructions only say to cut the pin 3/4"
longer than the hinge...it doesn't mention bending the
end. What's the 'best practice' with this?

Thanks,

-Jason

Hi Jason !

You can bend one end before inserting the pin, as it's easier
when you can clamp it. Then bend the other end after inserting.

Some folks hammer the one end to enlarge it, like a solid
rivet, but I think that might make it a lot harder to remove sometime
later, when you needed to replace or service it.

trim tab hinge pin

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Fri Feb 17, 2012 8:55 pm

Jason, another "angle" on the trim hinge is to just make it (the pin) the
length of the hinge and drill a small hole through the last hinge loop and
the pin, to insert a small length of .040 safety wire through. Or put a bend
in the end closest to the rudder (to use as a handle) so you can pull it out
after everything's assembled, and drill the hole in the other end for the
safety wire to hold the pin in place. This will allow for easy disassembly
if the need ever arises. If you bend both ends, chances are you aren't going
to ever get the pin back out, if you had to!

Regards,
Wayne G. O'Shea

What is the easiest and cleanest way to secure the trim tab hinge pin? I
need to do the door hinges as well.
